I always make my own MMF if I'm covering a cake in fondant, and I'm wondering if using Satin Ice would be easier. Is it worth the cash to use it on larger cakes instead of making fondant? I've heard it tastes good - any thoughts?
Yes, I think it is well worth the money. I used it for the first time a couple of weeks ago for a wedding cake and grooms cake and it was wonderful. My mouth was hanging open at how easy it was to work with. I covered all three tiers of wedding cake and grooms cake in a short period of time. I have alway used MMF, and like it, but, there really is no comparison, especially when covering large cakes!! Good Luck!
I haven't used satinice yet. For me, I dont have kids and while I do have a full time job, I made cakes trying to supplement my income. The way I see it, I can be sitting on the sofa watching tv in the time I save buying the pre-made fondant, or I can make my own for much cheaper. This way my profit is much larger. When I have kids and my time is worth more money, I will consider buying the fondant, but for now, it's just not cost efficient.
I agree, for me it is a time/money factor. Plus I love cooking and baking, so I love making the fondant myself. And that way I have a little bit more control over the flavors. I can use the money I save to buy some more fun tools.
Yes, for the amount of times you make MMF and it doesn't turn out perfect, either dry and crumbly or soft and too stretchy. With Satin Ice you will get a consistent texture, it's already made, no mess, and it definitely will save you time. For my taste buds MMF is too sweet, I am still not a true fan of eating fondant, but Satin Ice or Fondx both taste better to me than MMF.
I forgot to ask if Satin Ice comes already flavored or not, and if you should order the colors or color it yourself. What do you think?
I have used Satin Ice before and found it to be a little too sweet, but the flavor is ok. I would use it if I had to cover a large wedding cake, but I would have to find a way to get a little salt into it and I would flavor it. It was easy to work with and color.
I have not tried adding flavoring to the premade fondants, I'd be leery of adding salt, I have a feeling it will leave white spots if you color the fondant. I have seen salt do that to buttercream icing. I too buy the darker colors premade, I have used Black, Red and Blue. For coloring softer colors I make a small ball of white fondant, about the size of a small ping pong ball, color it a shade darker than what I want the finshed color to be and knead it into the white fondant. You get a smoother blend of the color, no dark spots here and there as happens sometimes f you add gel or paste color directly to the white.
Go to a search engine and type in "Satin Ice Fondant" and it will come up with many places that carry it, then you can select the best price and shipping costs to your area. Some places carry it in 2 1/2 lb. containers, some 5 lb. or more.
I have never tried the satin, but would like to know more about it. The only fondant I have ever used is the Wilton yucky stuff and MMF. Taste and texture wise how do they compare? The satin, what does it taste like. While eating it does it desolve in you mouth like the MMF or is it gummy like the Wilton stuff?
Satin ice is great. I also love fondx. I have tried MMF and as mention before you can have problems when making it. So it is a matter of how much time you would like to spend.
20lbs of santin ice is $55.50 at, they also have colored santin ice, 5lbs buckets.

shipping would probably be about $17. You need a spend $50 to place an order and you do not know you shipping cost tell after they ship it. Ship cost has all ways been great. I have ordered two buckets of Fondx and plus some other stuff, shipping to CA was $17.00. Never had a problem, have ordered from them for the last seven years. No business license needed.
Fondx - 10lbs is 24.75.

just type in fondant and alot of chooses come up for you.
IMO it is worth the expense, even to ship it! Just the mess & cleanup of MMF alone drives me crazy, not to mention the times it doesn't come out quite right.

If you're looking for a better tasting store-bought fondant, Fondx would be it IMHO. It is a softer and more pliable than SatinIce.
I weighed myself with and without the fondant in my hands, and it looks like one batch of chocolate MMF weighs 2.5 pounds (and I need to quit eating fondant). On that subject, is there a chart somewhere that tells approx. how many pounds of fondant is needed for specific cake sizes?
Here's the Wilton chart for fondant amounts: http://www.wilton.com/wedding/makecake/fondant/fondantamounts.cfm
FOUND ONE AT http://www.earlenecakes.com/Fondantchart.html
I love Satin Ice - it is easy to work with and goes on beautifully on the cake. My largest bucket is the white color and i have small 5 pound buckets of the hard to get colors like red and black. Also, the chocoalate Satin Ice is great - it tastes like a tootsie roll.
JUSTSWEET....WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE IN FONDX AND SANTIN ICE?
Satin ice is a little more stiff even after working to get it ready to put on the cake.
Fondx is a lot softer. The one probably is the more you work with it will become softer and softer. So some people have gotten frustrated with it. When it become to soft you need to let it rest, it will not tear when apply to a cake. It has been recommened to add you color a hours or a day ahead of time because the fondant will be so soft you be here posting about how the fondant is not working for you. But you let it rest and it will be back to its form for rolling out.
Both are great you will not be disappointed with either.
I love Satin Ice. It's the only other fondant I've used besides what Wilton sells as fondant. The flavor is great! I describe it as a vanilla marshmallow.
I found it was actually easier to use if I microwaved it for a few seconds. I had some that got hard (stuff I colored and had extra of in a baggie) and microwaving it made it even softer than when I first took it out of the bucket.
Thanks Justsweet for the reply....I am looking forward to trying both of them..
I have been using Wilton in the past and sometimes it works good and other times it seem stiff and dry.....I don't know. Thanks also the site to buy....
