I'm making a 4 tiered cake for my daughter's graduation. 12-10-8 and 6 The bottom 2 layers will be stacked. Then the wilton globe separator, the 8" tier, globe separaror then the 6' tier. My question is this. Do I need dowels or hidden pillars in the 12 and 10 inch stacked layers? or just a cardboard round and then the pillars ontop of it. I hope someone understands what I mean and can help me. Thanks icon_lol.gif

Yes, you need to dowel both of the bottom layers...the 12" to support the 10" on top of it, then the 10" to support what's resting on it.
You'll also need to dowel the 8" layer to support the 6".
You do not need to put a hidden pillar/dowel where the globe separators are. Also, you should put each cake layer on a cardboard round.

(Did that make sense?)

Just remember that cake shouldn't be a support; the dowels, pilliar type things, and cake plates are what supports the cake.

So I can use thwe Wilton plastic hidden pillars as supports? I think they are easier to cut.

Thanks for saying that....I didn't mean to infer that the cake actually suppports anything. OOPS!

karensjustdessert, I wasn't saying you did, I was just adding to your explanation, not correcting it. Sorry for the confusion.

Yup, anything sturdy enough to support the weight of the tiers above it will work. Just make sure to cut them to the same height as the cake, if they're too short it will mush the cake a little and can crack your icing or fondant. I actually prefer the hidden pillars on the larger layers, I think it gives more support. I would recommend dowels for the smaller layers, because the hidden pillars cut out more of the cake so you can loose servings (if that's important). I've heard that garnening pruners are good for cutting dowels, though I haven't tried it personally. My future DH cuts mine on a small bandsaw for me.
