hello all,
I have a question. How do you get a stacked round cake even. I done a cake for my hubby for practice, but the sides were sunk in a bit. So how do I prevent this from happening. I mean where the two cakes come together. How do I fill that in so it doesn't show.

Not sure why that would happen I have never had that happen, but could you have baked it too long.

This happened to one of my cakes too...I think it was a 10" round....I never did figure out why it did that, but I managed to cover it up with icing. (Good thing, too, as it was part of a wedding cake!)

The cake tasted just fine to me.

I don't know why the layers don't match up sometimes either. I stack them as close to being even as I can and then fix with frosting also.

Maybe using the bake even strips would help?

I am confused..are you saying the cakes aren't the same size, or the tops are not even? (you need to level your cakes if the tops aren't even..I always level all my cakes the same exact measurement, even if the tops look pretty even, so my layers look the same)

As far as being a different diameter (size), there is a huge difference in how a cakes brown on the sides and how much they pull away from the sides while baking, based on how shiny the pan is. If one pan is shinier then they other, you will have different cakes!

Also, if you oven is uneven, your cakes will bake differently...

What I'm talking about is the sides of the cake right after I took it out of the pan...the sides were sunken in. Almost like it was trying to collapse on the sides. The sides of my cakes are usually straight up & down, but the cake looked like this: >llllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll<. I hope that shows a little of what I"m talking about.

It only happened to me once. I use the same pans over & over. I use the same cake mix for these that I usually use for white cake.

Maybe it was just a one time thing. Could it have had something to do with baking several cakes at once? Maybe I did bake this one a little too long.

All together, I baked two 6", two 10" and two 14" cakes. Only one of them, one of the 10" did this on the sides.

I hope you didn't do all of these at once! hahaha! (unless you have a very large convection oven) What may have happened was the oven got too hot..did you by any chance open the oven door during the baking as well? (You should never open the oven door until the cakes are done)

It really sounds like it was just one of those times...I have had cakes fall for no reason at all!! Especially in this weather!

Nope! LOL! I didn't do all of them at once!!! icon_razz.gificon_razz.gif

I guess it was just one of those things. I easily covered it up with icing and no one ever contacted me about it, so....I was just wondering why it happened.
