Okay, this is the VERY first time I have ever posted a message on any forum, anywhere, so I am a forum virgin (can I say that?).

This is kind of scary, but fun. Anyway, my grand-daughter (yes, female) who is going to be 9 wants a pirate theme for her birthday, and I would like to make cupcakes.

You folks are so creative with your ideas (I get such a kick out of all the messages and tips).

Thanks in advance for any help!
Kaycee

So many suggestions, so quickly! You guys are fast!
I'm intrigued by the eye patch idea, mainly because it is so original. Maybe have 2 eyes only on top of the cupcake, with a patch over one.

Southerngirl, that is a beautiful photo, it must be fondant. If I could practice first I would love to do that.

And Doug, it's too late; I'm already addicted!! FUN!

Loved the description of yourself. LOL! Anyway, welcome to CC. Just thought I would suggest some gold coins. Not as clever as the other ideas.

I found that photo at a website somewhere. I believe it's fondant but you could probably pipe it as well. I have some pirate cookies to make in a couple of weeks and I was thinking of using that photo as a pattern and just cut the shapes out of fondant. Good luck with your cupcakes!

Thanks Doug! Also was thinking of a treasure chest in the sand (graham cracker crumbs on top of the cupcakes.) Toy treasure chests with a hidden treat?

In the Decorating Candy Wilton book (small, $3) there's a pic of an island. You make the sand out of coconut in chocolate. While it's still wet, put in a fat tall pretzel stick. Or several if you want more trees. On top use spearmint gummy leaves sliced in half so they're not too fat. Then put peanuts attatched with royal icing for coconuts. Then you could put your other things around this to make your setting bigger.
Blessings!

What about a parrot somehow?

Now my head is swimming with ideas. The gold coins are perfect! I could also put them in their favors bags!
As for the treasure chest, if I could fashion some sort of lid, I could make a strand of "pearls" with those shiny candy balls coming out of it!!!
I see now that I really need to pick up a Wilton book for ideas.

Just a last note: My nephew graduated from the Fire Academy and I wanted to make a cake that was a little different and not so cute. He wanted chocolate/chocolate so I found clipart of some orange/purple flames, piped them on and sprinked that shimmery edible glitter in the same colors on it. The picture didn't come out very well as you couldn't see the glitter, and that really made the cake.

Thanks again for the great tips...I'm now going to have fun sorting out all the great ideas!

Okay, I had another idea for you but I don't know if it would work. What about making the actual cupcakes into the treasure chests? You could even use mini-loaf pans for the square effect. Then cut off the top, or "lid." Hollow out the middle and add in "treasure" like a ring pop, candy necklaces, jolly ranchers, etc. Then decorate the cupcake with icing to look like the decor. of a treasure chest.

Blessings and treasures your way!

You could also make cannon-balls with a wick and "fire."

OK, quit making my creative juices juggle! I gotta go prepare for a cake class! icon_biggrin.gif

WOW !!! Impressive idea...

of course those cannon-balls are made from the scooped out cake (cannon-balls -- a new name for cake balls!!)

Hey, Doug, you're stronger than me! I was just gonna eat the insides! We need energy to decorate, don't we?

Yes, the mini-loaf pans would work perfectly! And I love the treasure inside...I would have to make sure the kids knew that there was something inside so that they wouldn't break a tooth, or choke.

The cannon balls would be cute, nestled in with the coins.

Shiver me timbers, I think it's coming together! Thanks!

if you wanted to make the above pirate cupcakes without fondant you could always frost the cupcakes in copper and pipe on the facial features and bandana. and if you wanted the ear you could use candy melts or royal icing and then stick that into the cupcake when it dries. but i'm not sure how you would get the earring on there. any ideas anyone?

just had another idea....you can always try a cupcake cake and decorate it with pirate toys. since the new pirates of the carribean just came out there are a bunch of pirate themed toys out there. here's the link for the cupcake cake tutorial.
