I would love to try and make one of these realistic guitar cakes for my brother's birthday coming up. He builds custom guitars and built me one for Christmas. I would love to give him a replica in cake of one he has made with his logo on it. Can anyone point me in the right direction of how to go about making one?

well, since you want to do a replica, the first thing you will need is the pattern he used for one of his guitars. Any way he'd loan you one or someone could sneak one out to you?

then for the body..just bake several sheet cakes...enough to get a slab of cake big enough that you can put the pattern on it and cut around it to get the shape of the body.

then for the neck, most use fondant covered cardboard. usually have to support tuning peg end w/ a dowel

strings...big debate -- spaghetti, fishing line, heavy thread, yarn.

fret work: Butter cream or fondant.

logo: FBCT or chocolate transfer or paint it on or cut out of fondant

your biggest challenge is getting the pattern. If you can't get that, do you know one of his customers that you could take a large sheet of paper and trace the outline of the guitar???

I just made one last month for my hubby's b-day using the Wilton Guitar pan. It makes for easier decorating. I didn't use a star tip, I value my time and hand more than that!! I just smooth iced it in the suggested pattern and then used fondant for the accents and Hershey kisses for the tuning knobs. (Sorry I'm sure they have an official name, but I don't play!) It turned out very cute (haven't posted a pic yet) and didn't take much time at all. You could customize the colors to match your guitar.

Thanks Vien. I looked through all the guitar pictures last night, maybe I could pm someone if I have a question.

I just delivered a 50's fender yesterday (see it in my photos). Let me know if that is what you had in mind and I would be happy to help you out with directions. I figured it out as I went along, but if the work is already done, why re-create the wheel, right?
BTW- I am the mom of 3 and always happy to help another mom- esp. of 4- you go girl!!!
