OMG i'm so nervous!! My cake instructor just called me. I finished all the last of the gumpaste course last week, and she called to tell me she had a family emergency and has to leave town tomorrow.....and wants ME to take over her new Course #1 class tomorrow!!! icon_eek.gificon_eek.gificon_eek.gificon_eek.gificon_eek.gif

She has asked me so many times to be her assistant and teach with her, but i'm so new at this it just really makes me nervous!! I just started in January and she thinks i'm good enought to teach other people how to do it!?!?!? Atleast course 1 class 1 is totally easy, just making icing and showing them how to ice the cake. But still, it's just really intimidating!!

icon_redface.gificon_redface.gificon_redface.gificon_redface.gif Plus i'm left handed and don't want to teach anyone to decorate backwards. icon_redface.gificon_redface.gificon_redface.gificon_redface.gif

If she thinks you're good enough, then you must be! You'll be fine!

Consider it payback for having to deal with everything made for right handed people. icon_twisted.gificon_lol.gificon_twisted.gificon_lol.gif

You'll do fine, good luck.

Jennifer,

You'll do great. Instructors "know" which of their students would make good teachers so the fact that she's endorsed you speaks volumes.

Do not worry about teaching them backwards because you're left handed. I think it's easier for students to learn from a left-handed instructor particularly if you stand in front of them to demonstrate. Plus, you'll get better at using your right hand as you assist your students in showing them the proper form.

Good luck and have fun!

When I taught my first class I was nervous too, but it helps if you just think of it as you are sharing your love of cake decorating to a group of soon to be friends. Have fun!

Don't worry, Jennifer, if your instructor thinks you are good enough, then you most certainly are. Just keep in mind that you know SO much more than they do. I started teaching right after I took Course III and didn't think I was good enough, either. I freaked out when I taught my first few classes, too, and then I realized how much I could really teach them. All the tips and tricks I've learned along the way, especially from this site. In the first lesson, it's only basic things anyway. You won't be teaching them the rose in the first lesson, either, so don't worry about being left handed. There are a ton of left handed teachers that are awesome.
You should go to the Wilton site and fill out an application to be an instructor. It's a lot of fun, it gets you out of the house, and you can earn a little bit of pocket change doing the thing that you love.

Hi, Jennifer

Like Renae said, you know more than the strangers sitting in front you. I've taught for 5 yrs and the best advice I can offer you is to be yourself. Take a deep breath, look like you know what you're doing (remember, you know more than they do!) and if they ask you a question you can't answer, offer to find out the answer and have it for them the following week. I've always found my students appreciate my honesty when I tell them I don't know the answer but will try to find out. When I taught my first class, I was up front with them about it being my first class and that seemed to put everyone at ease as students are also nervous about doing something new, especially if they think they may not be able to do it.

Please let us know how your first class went. I'm sure it will go great!
