I dont have any YET... but are you waiting for the frosting to crust? I hear it works really good when that happens.... but I am not sure.... I am sure others can help

I don't recommend using on Buttercream. I would suggest using on fondant, gumpaste, gingerbread, or pastillage, maybe chocolate, then adding them to the cake.

I have heard the diamond quilted pattern works well with crusted buttercream if you dust the mat with pwdr sugar, but the more detailed ones I have probably wouldn't work for that.

My first try was on my 6" round pan. I used some left over b/c and tried the viva method and then the impression mats that I found at Michaels in the kids clay section.

Hey elipsis - I really like that impression on the cake!!! It looks cool!! and thanks for sharing where you found it. I have been wanting to try to use an impression mat and now I know where to find one that I can use a coupon so I don't spend so much trying something new!! thumbs_up.gif

Be careful w/ the clay stuff - some of it is NOT food safe. The Sculpey molds, etc. are NOT food safe. However, Makin' Clay told me that theirs are..... so just be careful that what you're using won't leave behind any harmful chemicals or anything!

if you are doubtful about Clay stuff (w/c I for one am not), your other option is using textured rolling pins. I have Clay tools w/c I have been using, but I also have and use textured rolling pins w/c comes in an array of diff. beautiful designs.. icon_smile.gif

I use impression mats all the time on buttercream (I really don't do many fondant cakes) and have absolutely no problem with it. I wait for my buttercream to crust and then I dust my mat with cornstarch since it dissolves into the buttercream (I have never used the powdered sugar - I am guessing it will work just as well). Then I place my mat where I want it and smooth it down with my fondant smoother. Works wonders every time. Sometimes I need to redust with cornstarch.

Thanks for the heads up on the clay materials. I just checked and the one I used is the "makin's" brand thumbs_up.gif Another good thing is that it was a three pack for $3.29. What a deal.
