Using Wires On The Cake For Decorations.

I tried putting some wires in my cake for the first time this weekend. I used 18 guage wire with fondant/gumpaste daisies attached to them. I had a couple questions.
1) are you supposed to bend the wires before putting the decorations on them to dry? I originally just wanted them curved (I was going to run the wire along a dowel, but I ended up just bending them randomly because I was afraid of breaking my flowers.
2) I used coffee straws on the wire to insert into the cake so that the wire would not touch the cake. However when I pulled out the decorations, the coffee straws stayed inside the cake!! How do you get them out? How do I prevent this from happening in the first place?
Any other tips for using wires on cakes would be greatly appreciated! TIA
To attach your daisies to your wire you want to creat a small cone either out of gumpaste or you can buy what is called a celshape which is a preshaped stryrofoam cone they sell. You hot glue your wire into the cone (or create a hook and let that dry overnight if your using gumpaste). Then you create your daisy center and gum glue it to your cone. Then from there you to the rest of your work. Then after your flower is dry you can wrap your wire with floral wire.
As for your straws, I used regular drinking draws because they were easier for me to get out. I put some royal icing in them to hold the flowers into place.
When I arrange my bouquets I will use my needle nose pliers so that I dont break my flowers. That way you can get into tight places.
Hope that helps. If you need anything else, pm me!
