How Do You "spice Up" A Sheet Cake?
Decorating By SarahJane Updated 17 Jul 2006 , 8:03am by SarahJane
I've been asked to do more sheet cakes lately. What do you guys do to make these a little more special?? I have one for monday. I've already done the fbct. The plan is yellow sheet cake, fbct on left, writing on right. This is a really important cake and could get me more business, any way to make this cake a "show stopper" ???
I do a lot of sheet cakes too and I love looking at cakes in the gallery for ideas----Here is a link to a decorator who is very creative with sheet cakes---

Thanks, she had some really cute cakes. This is corporate though, so I'm not sure if cute is what I'm looking for. I like how she used the comb on a lot of her cakes. Do you guys think that would be more interesting than just iced flat?? ANYONE ELSE OUT THERE WITH SOME IDEAS????
-Make FBCT or Royal icing bunches of balloons to add color and fill space.
-Add objects like briefcase, office supplies, anything related to the business.
-Foil picks:

-Flowers
To me what makes sheet cakes more special is the personalization! It's the feeling the receipients get when they see the cake and KNOW it was created especially for them.
So, if it's corporate, then try to find out something about the office group ... what do they share as a group? ... maybe an inside joke, something that recently happened, something they always talk about, something they do together ... say, donuts on Fridays. Maybe there's an expression they always use when they accomplish something (or mess up something.)
I always use my sheet cakes as a platform for my 3-D cakes. Is there a 3-D pan you can use to put something cute on top such as a doll cake, car, duck, bear? Just a thought!
If there's a 'theme' for the corporate party, maybe you could go with that. If not, does the company have a logo that you could get an idea from?
It's a safety party for a seafood restaurant. I already did a fbct of their logo. They wanted a really brite "safety" yellow for the icing. So I have the yellow cake, logo on left, words "300 Days Safe" on the right", but it seems kind of plain. I'm not sure if I should keep the border the same color yellow or if I should use one of the logo colors??? The logo is mainly red and blue and then the yellow cake, it's really brite. This is a really great opportunity for me to get future business and I just want the cake to be amazing, but it's just kind of boring. What do you guys think???
There is a topic going on right now about creating shell borders. Someone posted her pic with alternating chocolate and white shells that go down the cake - from top to bottom.
you could do that same effect with yellow, black, yellow, black....like the safety stripes.
I would post a link....but I don't know how. Just look at the last few posts to see it. I was amazed at how much it made the cake POP.
That's awesome, Dale. Hey, we were all thinking it weren't we?
I realize that your posting says that the cake is for a coporate event on Monday, so my reply is prob. too late, but nonetheless I will throw my idea out there anyway.
This may or may not be relevant, but if the company logo is not too complicated you could try creating the logo on the sheet cake. You could copy the logo off of the website and blow it up on a copier. Then use Wilton's piping gel to trace the design onto wax paper. Flip the wax paper over onto the cake and the gel will act as your guidelines for decorating.
If you're really good, you could cut the sheet cake into the logo design and go from there with the decorating.
Just another idea for a potential show stopper!
Vicki, your prawns are awesome, I wish I would have seen them earlier. That would have been so awesome. I decided to do the sides of the cake with stripes. I did red blue and black to go with the logo and the yellow from the cake showed through. The FBCT turned out really good and overall I'm happy with it, but darn those shrimp would have been so cute.
