Here's the situation...
Someone requests a 10" round stacked on a 1/2 sheet cake.
I would base ice the 10" round....base ice the half sheet...then position the round on the 1/2 sheet(normally, the round would be on its' own board...but it was requested to not have the board under the round). Then, do the decorating.
My question is...
How many of you would place and uniced round on the base iced 1/2 sheet to base ice it?
I am not saying it is wrong do to it that way, just I had never heard of anyone doing it that way until today. It just seemed like it would be difficult to me to do it that way.
Please, share.
how are you going to support the 10" on top of the sheet cake w/o a board??
I don't think this would be a problem...as long as neither cake is over 1 layer tall. It would be just like stacking a second sheet cake on top....right?
I think you are right, ice the sheet cake. Put the round on top, and then ice that...and decorate.
I think it would be easier to have a base board for the round cake....but if they don't want it that way...go for it.
yeah, guess it would depend on how many layers each cake will be. Sorry, I was assuming they would be 2 layers each!!
but i don't see a problem w/icing the sheet and then placing the round on and icing that!! you may have to touch up the top of the sheet cake a bit....but otherwise it should be fine.
I'm sorry. It is a single layer half sheet and a 2 layer round. I would ice the round on a board or directly on the turntable and then take a spatula slide it under while turning the table to remove it and place it on the other cake.
So, ya'll ice the lower "tier", then place an uniced tier on top of that and ice it?
I know it can be done. But even with a board under it, it just seems risky. Maybe I'm just thinking about what a messy cake decorator I am.
You could ice the round cake first, then freeze it. and place on the sheet cake frozen. Of course, you will have to wait for the cake to thaw before adding decorations.
I have added one layer rounds on top of sheet cakes with out a board...it's just like a 2-lyer cake so you won't have a problem with the cake "sinking" into the other one. And I have frosted both ways...before placing/freezing first and after it is on the cake. You should have a border around the bottom of the round that will hide any scrapes.
