Looking For Help Finishing Off This Graduation Cake Design.

This is a graduation cake for our local Jewish Day school which ends at 5th grade. This year there are two students graduating. The theme I have gone with is a hot air ballon, since this is sort of a send off from being in a Jewish school and moving out into public schools.
This is what I am doing so far:
2 layer 12" x 18" cake, half chocolate, half vanilla, frosted in grass green. In the center of the cake I will have 3 wooden steps and a hot air balloon. Fondant figures of the Rabbi, teacher and 2 students. The Rabbi (principal) will be on the top step handing Judaica items to the 2 graduates. The 5th grade teacher is on the step below with items in her hand as well. On the balloon is a banner saying Mazel Tov and on the basket is the logo of the school. The sketch below is a view from the side:
I am drawing a total blank on how to fill in the outer edges of the top, what type of a border or side embellishments (if any) for this cake. Can anyone give me some ideas? I feel like it needs some other "stuff"
Thanks,
Kathi
Could you use some Jewish symbols in the corners? I'm sorry, I don't know how to spell it, but something like the chai (sp?) that I have seen in jewelery? Star of David?
Otherwise, how about a Hebrew saying across the top of the cake, from one side to the other - above the balloon? A verse from the Bible?
Sometimes when I'm stumped for designs, I do a search of clipart. You could try that for some ideas for the corners, too.
Good luck. HTH.
I don't think I want to put anymore Jewish symbols on the cake because there are already so many going into the balloon basket. (The Rabbi is handing them a Torah Scroll, they will have a menorah, books, schallah, candlesticks, etc.) I don't want to overdo it. I thought about putting a saying around the side, I just haven't thought of anything.
The balloon will look like it is out in the middle of a field of grass, so maybe I will just put some trees and bushes.
I'd love to hear any other suggestions.

I was just thinking that maybe you could do some grass around the edges with some flowers...like they are in a field...then you could add some other bushes or things like you suggested. Or what about a small bridge somewhere to symbolize the moving on to public school? just ideas! Hope you figure it out!! ![]()
What about swags...you know like around the sides of the cake, like a stage setting. Or a fence, since you will have trees and shrubbery. Or you could carve the cake to look like a hillside with them at top...okay, sorry, that seems like more work LOL. When I use the grass tip (number anyone please
), I never put a border on top and at the bottom I just trim it with any other border if I don't have something else going on with it. sorry if I was of no help
Thanks! I did a mock up and I like how a fence will look around the sides! I'll also have some shrubbery or grass along the top edge. I'm probably the only one silly enough to use blocks, drawings and toys to "build" my cake design
, but I'm a very visual person!!
Anyway, thanks again,
Kathi
