Okay. I know someone on this fabulous board can help with this one --
I'm wanting to make a lollipop cake; featuring three fondant versions of those huge tri-colored lollipops on top of the cake.

I figured out how to get the swirl effect going, but my problem is with architecture. Two things:

One -- Can someone help me figure out how to get the stick to support the fondant candy without the fondant falling off? I pushed in a dowel rod, but the fondant was so heavy it just plopped off.

Two -- Even if I can figure out how to get the lollipop to remain attached to the stick without falling, how can I stick the giant lollipops into the cake without them slicing through the cake? I experimented with sticking one in the center of a cake and it just would not stay in place. Maybe it's too heavy?

Help! I just think this would be too cute. But, for the life of me, I can't execute.

Thanks bunches and I can't wait to hear back from you!

What are you using for the lollipops? Are you using a cookie dough? As for the fondant maybe you can roll it thinner so it's not so heavy. My suggestions would be to do giant sugar cookies for the lollipop and decorate with RI in the swirly pattern Plus I think the RI would be more candy looking than fondant. That way they will be less heavy and hopeully stay up right in your cake. The other problem might be that your sticks are too long Hope this helps some.

Running with the sugar cookie idea, color your dough the colors you want and swirl them together like you were your fondant and it will be cooked in. I hope this is not clear as mud.

You are using fondant to make the lollipops right? Maybe you could use a dummy for the top layer to keep the lollipops in? To help with the actual sticking of the sticks in the fondant....are you adding gum tex with the fondant to make it stronger? That'll help make it stronger so that then you can put the dowel in and have it stay there (one it has been given sufficient time to dry of course...which could be significant, especially with the heat and humidity that is building up around the country)

Why not just use real lollipops?
