Why is it every time I make a cake for someone (paid or not) I get this response?!

Does anyone else get this a lot? How do you respond?!

All my cakes & frosting are made from scratch - does that make a difference?

most people are used to a light box mix and don't really know what a real sratch cake feels like or tastes like.

People are always surprised at how heavy cakes are. By the time you torte and fill and add extra frosting for decorating...they weigh a ton!! I did one for my son's birthday days after I had back surgery that I wasn't even allowed to carry!
A recent customer had a comment that I loved, he said, "Well, don't they say a heavy cake is a good cake?" Personally I've never heard that, but it sounds good to me!

LOL! ALL my client's pick up their own cakes and ALMOST the first words out of their mouths are "This cake weighs a TON!" BUT, they keep coming back for more! LOL

I bake all cakes from scratch, that's what my customers like. I never had anyone mention how heavy the cake is until I delivered a cake to a lady at work and she said" thanks for the luggage". She then told me she takes public transportation home, I told her I take public transportation also. It was a 9 inch round.

My hubby always used to think I was doing something wrong with my cakes because they are so heavy. Then one night I had him watch the re-run of the Food Network Challenge where Collette Peters can't lift her cake to the judging platform. icon_biggrin.gif I agree - a heavy cake is a good cake!!

I make cakes from box mix, cakes with extender and from scratch they all weigh a ton by the time you get them torted, filled and decorated. People comment on the weight but never complain.

LOL... I posted my latest cake and commented that I think I pulled a muscle getting it into the car. Had to have help getting it into work. I had to go to my knees to put it in the car (low car) and my DD was inside holding it up so I wouldn't drop it. My 2nd "cake injury" (1st one was making the safari cake in my photos. I got a blister mixing colorflow) I'm such an "out of shape weenie" icon_cry.gificon_redface.gif

I don't care if people think that the cakes are heavy, they are. Even if you get a sheetcake from Sam's, they are not light. I just did a three tier cake for 50 and that puppy weighed almost 30 lbs!

But if they are referring to the cake flavor itself, then I wouldn't be too happy and would start experimenting.

Cakes ARE heavy, unless they are a light fluffy bakery cake with whipped topping on them. haha.

Especially fondant cakes, I get alot of comments about the fondant cakes being heavy.

Duff said something on one of his early shows that I will never forget...it was something like "You have to remember that cake is very heavy, and that it will.....never stop.....trying to destroy itself." It's been my mantra ever since icon_smile.gif

You use pounds of flour, pounds of butter, pounds of sugar....
How COULD they be light?
