A cake mix extender will make a typical cake mix taste more like a scratch mix, you can add different flavors (almond, vanilla, lemon extracts, or even use a coffee mate or international delight flavored creamer to vary your flavors), and it will make the mix go a bit further (your pan calls for 7 cups of cake mix, and your box makes 5 1/2, the extender will help to add the rest without having to make a whole other box mix and have most left over).
