For awhile now, anytime I use fondant I let my 2yr old son sit at the table w/me and play with his playdough. I let him use some of my cookie cutters and other fun fondant toys that I don't use much. He will only use my huge plastic wilton rolling pin to roll out his playdough (or his belly.....
yeah don't ask...my child is weird!!). so we've been doing this for awhile now. He has a great time and it's fun to sit at the table w/him and watch him stack his playdough to try and make the same thing i am!!
Well he's started hounding me while I actually ice the cakeconstantly askingwhatcha doin mommy. You put dat icing on dat cake, etc. and trying to hand me my stuff to...'help'!! Well I finally caved in the other day while I was crumb coating and gave him some cake scraps and an icing bag.....i know...what was i thinking!!
of course he LOVED it!! he was so proud of his cake...he carried it around the house for awhile showing the dogs and his superman and bob builder toys the cake he made!! He even made me take a picture of it!! he sat it down on the table and I went to move it back so it wouldn't fall....he looks at me and with his hand in the air he says...."mommy, don't touch dat cake....dat's aiden's cake" ![]()
I say this to him when he gets a littel too close to one of the cakes I'm doing..."Aiden don't touch the cake....that's mommy's cake!!"
well last night while i was finishing up a cake....all he wated to do was make his own!! so i gave him some more scraps and an icing bag and let him go to town!!
guess their never too young to learn!! it was so fun watching how excited he is while he is squeezing globs of icing all over the cake, plate, table, etc!!! and of course he loves the reward of getting to eat it!!
That is SO very sweet. What a lovley mom you are. I love stories like this!
I want to see a pic of his cake!
How cute, I'm sure he has tons of fun.
There are all kinds of decorating that kids can help with or do something on the side. Extra batter can be put in little pans and you can even find some wilton pans from the 70's that take about 1/3 of a mix on ebay.
My boys like painting raw cookies with egg yolk, molding chocolate, decorating scraps or their own cakes and giving me advice. My oldest is 7 and he even makes plain chocolates on his own when I need them and have stuff going on. ![]()
My mom has my 3 year old nephew rolling out his own cookie dough and he can do it perfectly.
no not yet, i def. will this evening!! it ended up being a hug blob of icing w/some cake underneath!! ![]()
i told my husband that i'm so happy that he actually likes to do this stuff w/me!! i was worried that having a boy I wouldn't get to share all the 'fun' stuff I like to do....i'd be sentenced to a life of sports, cars, and dirt!!!
but he's only 2 so he still likes spending time w/mommy!! ![]()
when i'm not doing a cake for a customer....one just to practice...I usually let him pour the ingredients into the bowl and he gets to turn on the mixer. he LOVEs to crack eggs and put the butter in the bowl. he already knows that anythime he walks in the kitchen he has to wash his hands!!! i usually have a HUGE mess and spend way more time doing everything when he helps...but i just love it and he gets so excited. its actually one of the only times i don't mind cleaning up a huge mess!!
That's awesome. I have three kids that want to get down and dirty with me but my kitchen just isn't big enough! They started a cooking class this week, so atleast I know they will get the proper instruction for using the oven and stove. Now, if I can just get them to agree that only one at a time can be in the kitchen with me all will be hunky dory! Have fun with Aiden while you can!
That's great! I have two boys, 5 and 3, and they love to help me too. Especially my 5 year old. He loves to use a piping bag. He loves to decorate the cakes for family functions, and we usually end up with a ton of frosting and several tons of sprinkles, but he's always so proud, and everyone makes a huge deral out of it when he carries it in.
You think you've created a monster now??? Wait til he's older and starts requesting very detailed birthday cakes! My boys did that this year. My 3 year olds birthday is in August, and he's requested Superman vs Lightning MacQueen, and is very specific on how it's to look. My 5 year olds birthday is in September, and has requested a general contractor cake, and very detailed instructions about this house being built cake! I'm sure if your little boy likes to help now, you're in for the same thing!
Heehee...I let my three year old decorate a 6" fondant cake last weekend. It was very cute, and she was proud!
The other day I was making a 9x13 and it doesn't quite take 2 cake mixes. So I thought I would try putting the extra batter in one of my Fiestaware bowls and baking it in that. It worked great and was just enough cake for dh and me for a few days.
OOps didnt finish the thought
- this size of cake would be perfect for him to make his own little creation then serve it after dinner.
What a sweet Mommy you are!!! These are memories he will cherish later in life. It takes a special Mom to come up with inventive ways to make her child feel special!! My 5 year old likes to help in the kitchen too. It usually ends up in a much bigger mess, but I try to remember that to him, he's done something really special! ![]()
Great cake!!!! He's got the sotas down for sure! This is only the beginning.
My almost 4 yr old likes to help measure out ingredients. The other day, my DH said to me "Look, he's been watching you..."
There was the little man scooping out the cat food into the dish, and LEVELING the scoops with his hand!
Cracked me up!
My older boys get to make their own gingerbread houses---after about 2 wks of NO touchy on mine. But if I make an elaborate one, once the display is over, they get to totally destroy it!
Today i was making a glaze for cinnamon buns and my 2 1/2 year old helped me measure and pour in the powdered sugar & vanilla. they are so helpful sometimes.
Great cake for his 1st. ![]()
oh.. Thank you so much for postng the pic. Please tel your son that he did a FANTASTIC job! ![]()
Great job and never to early to let them learn to cook with you. My kids are very close to me and have always cooked with me. Sometimes it is easier to do it yourself but now my 14 yr old girl is making her own cakes to take with her and my son is now a chef at a restaurant and only 17. I think it helps to let them enjoy cooking and know how much work and fun it can be. My son helps cook supper when he is home and loves to help me. Let him help you out cause in the long run it makes them more effiecient for themselves. Tell you son way to go on his beautiful cake.
As I watch my 32 year old get ready for her upcoming wedding, I read your story and tears came to my eyes. Isn't it wonderful that we can revell in the little things that make our "babies" happy. That we can let them try new things, explore, begin new adventures-sometimes concerned for their safety but willing to be there in case they stumble. As I read this, memories of her came flooding back....I blinked and she was grown.
I have 2 boys 4 and 8 months and we have explained to my 4 yr old that this is mommies "business". Of course he still wants to help, so everyone has a job and a title! My 4 yr. old is my "Design Team Specialist". I have to run all of my ideas by him before I do a cake and he helps me mix in the colors and stuff like that. And if I have to "paint" on a cake and it's a big area, I let him "paint". Now my husband and 8 month old have the best job of all, they are my "Quality Control Specialist", and they get to taste the icing and fondant and whatever else I make to be sure it's "good quality stuff to serve to the public." So, it's like a family business. And of course, this satisfies my son, because he has a job and a title and feels that he is helping and serving a purpose!!
how adorable! my 4 year old niece likes to "doc-orate" cupcakes, but i'm still trying to get her into cakes.
It's always fun to watch your children grow and do something that will be with them for a long time!
My daughter watched me all the time while she was growing up and now she is doing wedding cakes without a class. Just me putting a decorating bag in her hand and letting her go with it!
She does beautiful work and I'm proud of her!!!!!
