In my photos I have a pic of the cake I am planning for my brothers wedding in 3 weeks (eric trial run). The beads are falling off the sides of the 6in cake. Should I use a larger cake board underneath or would it look funny above the 9in cake? Also the RBC is shiny is this normal or just the shortening I used? What can I do to fix the problem in the future? Last question. The final cake will be a total of seven "tiers". The two in the picture will be above a 12in cake that is over a fountain with stairs to the two cake on each side. I was planning to make the side cake exactly the same as the top two cakes. Is this okay or should I have different designs for each cake? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I like the idea of decorating the side cakes with the same design as the central cake. For your top cake, I would use a slightly larger (if it's a 6in cake, I'd use an 8in) plastic seperator plate (probably the one with the scalloped edges to add to the design) so that your border doesn't fall off.

I can't help with the shininess, sorry. I prefer using fondant. I hope someome else will post and answer that for you...

Sounds like it will be a beautiful cake. Make sure to post a picture... I'd love to see the final product icon_smile.gif

RBC is shiny by character. If you're open to using fondant, you will have a cake that has a matte finish, taste will be different though.

I would place your 6" cake on a slightly bigger cake board (probably a 6.5" board cut from 1/4" foam core), then place the cake on foamcore on your 6" plastic separator plate. You will have a little of the 1/4" foam core showing but I don't think it will take distract from your design.

Making the side cake with same design as the top two cakes is a good idea imho since it ties all cakes together with the same design.

I have recently started using RBC on my cookies and have found that if I gently "wipe" or rub the surface of the cookie with a Viva paper towel, it removes a lot of the shininess. You could possible try this on your cake if you decide not to switch over to fondant. Also, adding a little more confectioner's sugar to the RBC helps me reduce the shininess too.

thank you all for your tips and advice. Would marshmallow fondant work better? Can I add flavor to it to adjust the taste?

Yes and yes. You can use Lorann oils to flavor your MMF.

I'm not sure if i'm seeing this right..But are there only 2 pillars supporting the top tier? If so i think there should be at least three. I'd hate to see it topple over. Great looking cake!

Revel, no there are four pillars to support it. Thanks! Everyone has decided against the "bead" border on the top so I will probably just use ropes on all three sections, using varying colors on them to match the wedding colors. Blue-purple, purple-white, and blue-white.
