I am making a shower cake for tomorrow. I want to cover it in fondant and then pipe stripes down the sides with tip 3 in different colours of pink. I don't have any experience with stingwork and and wondering if it might fall of the cake. I have to drive the cake 45 minutes to the party and don't want it to fall off during the drive. Should I use royal icing or buttercream? Would one stick better than the other? I was going to use the Wilton tilting turntable to try this but have heard people have had trouble with thier cakes sliding off this turntable. I am so nervous about this cake, I won't know anyone at the shower except the bride. Ugh, please help......

I don't think it is too hard for a beginner.I would use Buttercream icing as royal icing is usually for decorations. You wouldn't want the guests to chip a tooth!! BC will stick better..royal will dry and chip off if knocked around.

I would use buttercream for the stringwork, as royal icing dries quickly and I could see that falling off. I have never used the tilting turntable, and I don't use one when I do stringwork, just the cake on the table. Definitely bring an extra bad fitted with the correct tip and icing for any patch jobs you may have to do onsite. Good luck!

I would be very careful if you use the tilting turntable. I can't remember anyone ever saying anything good about it. As far as the string work goes, I am a bit confused. Are you planning to do vertical stripes down the side of the cake? If so I think that I would use regular BC. For a 45 min drive I think that the royal would give you some problems.

Thanks so much for helping me out so quickly! I will do the buttercream and stay away from the tilting turntable. My stomach is in knots, I get so darn nervous before I do a cake. If the stringwork does start to fall off, can I just pick it all off or will it stain the fondant underneath?

Jasra,

The BC won't fall off. Relax and take a deep breath!! Take an extra bag along in case you need to touch up but you will be fine...
