All of a sudden i am noticing that there are fine cracks in my buttercream around the sides of the cake near the layers. I assume that my cake is settling. But one cake I had let sit overnight before I put on a final coat of icing, so I would have thought it was sufficiently 'settled'. The other one I did not let settle for very long. This is a new phenomenon to me. What can I else can I try?

I'm not sure if this will help, but do you ever add vinegar to your buttercream? I have (you don't taste it) and does seem to make a difference with crack control!

It's probably some kind of chemical reaction I'll never understand, but you should definitely try it. Just don't use a cup of it! haha...I made the buttercream dream and used two droppers full of vinegar. (I use the infant Tylenol dropper! I'm sure you have a few around the house!). It works.
