Hello everyone! I am new to posting here, I've been checking stuff out and I've gotten lots of tips and ideas! This site is WONDERFUL!!!! thumbs_up.gif I do have a question though. I have been doing cakes for family and friends for awhile, but I have had ALOT of requests from people to bake and decorate on a more regular basis where I would be able to charge for them. But I am not good at figuring out how much to charge. Family and friends I usually always do for free, but these are friends of friends asking now. Here's one cake that I just got done with, how much would you charge for it? It is 10, 8, 6, yellow cake on top and bottom, chocolate in the middle, buttercream frosting and the flowers are royal icing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA! icon_smile.gif

what is your per serving fee?

Earlene's chart says:
6" serves 8 people
8" serves 15 people
10" serves 30 people

53 people total

so, let's say you charge $2/serving that's $106 atleast. You would have to adjust the serving charge to your area. Hope that helps.

Welcome to Cake Central btw your cake is lovely!

Yes, definitely, $105.

I charge no less than $75 for the smallest tiered cake. I would call the bakeries in your area and inquire about a cake like that as if you were going to order one.

Or others here use a 3x's rule. Take the cost of ALL the ingredients and supplies used to make a cake and multiply by 3.

BTW--love the cake!

I agree your cake is beautiful. I feel i am cheating myself. I have been charging $10-$12 a cake box which doesn't add up to the $100 everyone would charge for this one. Am I under pricing? Should I have a new System? Help me too.

Thank you so much for all of the wonderfully nice comments! icon_smile.gif I delivered the cake this afternoon and the lady was thrilled with it. I stayed with the $40 price that we had agreed on at the beginning, and I asked her if she would spread my name around (she is from a well known family around here) since I was going to be opening a bakery soon. She said that she would give out my name and number anytime anyone even mentioned the word "cake"! icon_lol.gif She also made me feel good by saying that she was so happy with the fact that my cakes always tasted as good as they looked. They had always gone with regular sheetcakes from a chain store, so she knew everyone at the shower was going to be super impressed with this one. (We only have 1 specialty bakery in my area) There were supposed to be upwards of 50 people at this wedding shower, so hopefully I will get some more orders from it! And now thanks to you guys I can start pricing a little more fairly and not just winging it and ending up barely covering the cost of supplies icon_rolleyes.gif , not to mention all the time it takes! icon_biggrin.gif
Thank you, thank you, thank you! You guys on here are great! thumbs_up.gif

I charge flat fees for my cakes.. so much per inch and then I charge an extra ten dollars to decorate a cake .. basic.. butter cream.. borders and some type of Font. Flowers, garnishes and such are extra depending on the time and materials involved.
I'm not a chain store i do it all from scratch I figure if they want me to take the time and effort they're going to be willing to pay for excellence
