I ended up going with just silk hydrangeas instead of using real just in case they wilted. This was displayed at the LaGrange Hydrangea Festival with all the blossoms that were being judged. I am pretty proud of how it came out.

Very pretty cake! Love the blue and it looks very elegant. I bet it was a big hit!

Thank you! The camera made it look blue, but it's actually very purple. But it relaly did come out great.

whew lala. great job neighbor. the cake is so lovely. was your cake being judged? Blue ribbon in my book I say..

You can also take those tubes you get from the florists and fill them with water; insert the hydrangea stems and slip in to the cake. thus the stems not drying out.. if your worried about the tubes sticking out and showing a bit; simply pipe a border around it zig zag or star style etc. make it part of the design. but no one will really see it anyways with the flowers almost covering it
