OK...so I finally decided to try this...I mean...everyone else can do it, why not me?
DISASTER!!! I think this has to be my first disaster that I couldn't even bring myself to take a picture of.
I made the transfer of Shrek and donkey on Thursday night for my step granddaughters 3rd birthday. I took it out at the last minute today because I wanted to make sure it was completely frozen. Well, I guess my freezer was in its defrost mode or just the fact that it is a million degrees here in San Antonio. Anyway, I got the first part of the wax paper off with no problem but once I got closer to Shrek and donkeys faces...it was all over with! They totally stuck to the wax paper. I used half butter for the BC so I figured I would be safe. Anyway, I was shaking so bad that I almost couldn't salvage it. I did the best I could and took it to the party where everyone loved it! I had one person ask if it was done at one of the local grocery stores...don't know if that was a compliment or not. icon_redface.gif
I was going to try this technique again next Saturday....but I think I will stick to color flow. At least my stepdaughter liked it and my step granddaughter did too.
I have to admit....I didn't get angry, throw things or cry! But I'm still VERY disappointed!!!! icon_cry.gif

Oh, bless your heart! Try again, but not when it's something critical. I had that happen, once, but I never figured out why. I've done several others & they were fine.

Try Try Try!!!

Oh no, I'm so sorry that happened to you! I haven't tried FBCT yet. Actually, trying to decide if that is the way I want to go on a cake I am decorating for my nephew tomorrow. I'm chicken to try...because it looks so hard and sometimes I am all thumbs.
Better luck next week! I know you will have success! thumbs_up.gif

Oh, so sorry. Better luck on the next one!

I haven't tried this technique yet myself, but I have read other threads about the FBCT sticking to waxed paper, and people suggest using parchment paper or plastic wrap (taped down tight so it doesn't wrinkle). I don't know if that would make a difference or not. I've never had anything stick to parchment.

Hope the next one works out better! I might be brave enough to try this out someday!

I'm sorry you had a hard time with it. I've done a couple of FBCT and have had good experiences and bad. What I find that works best is to use all Crisco bc for the transfer. When I use half butter or hi ratio shortening, I get a lot more sticking. And when your putting it on the cake, do it fast. It thaws so quick so the quicker you get the wax paper off, the better. Hope that helps and good luck on your next one.

I tried it last week too and it did not work. It stuck to the paper and when I pulled it away only some of the icing stuck and the rest stayed on the paper. Tonight I put some crisco on the paper and some icing, and the same thing happened. FBCT does not like me!

I am guessing it was the heat. Question, did you have it in a deep freezer or regular freezer? I always put mine in the deep freezer. A suggestion would be next time have your cake as close to the freezer as you possibly can, so that it is literally seconds before it hits the cake. I love using FBCT's I use all butter in mine with no problem, so I don't think it was your frosting. Another thing I do is I will get it really frozen, then put wax paper on the back of it, flip it over, peel off the original wax paper and put a new piece on and freeze it some more. This will help it keep from sticking to the paper when you go to put it on your cake Of course you remove the backing after you get the new wax paper on.

I've had this happen once. Next time, try making it a little thicker, they don't thaw quite at fast. I think mine was too thin when it stuck. I've always used 1/2 butter bc, but I hear that all crisco tends to work better.

OH gosh.....thank you so much! I just have read so many good things about this technique that I thought I was a complete loser!!! I have to say that I couldn't wait to get home to post this so that you guys could make me feel better! I guess I never read any of the bad experiences. I love the recommendations. I will not be defeated! Although I don't think I will try this for the birthday cake I have to do next week....since I think I will also have to do a graduation/birthday cake as well for my stepson....AND work full time all next week; I will try this technique again with your recommendations! Thanks! I feel a lot better!!!! You guys are the BEST!!! icon_biggrin.gif

Oh...did I mention that EVEN my husbands ex-wife told me how much she liked it? I had to ask him later if he put her up to that! I know it sounds bad but I really wanted to out do myself on this cake because she was going to be there. Usually my stepdaughter has 2 seperate parties for her little one....with both grandparent's help of coarse! I know....that sounds awful....I'm a bad person. Sorry!

It's awesome that you got so many compliments from a 'disaster'!! You must have recovered better than you thought!

Thanks shelbur10...but no...I looked at the one picture I took of it and it was AWFUL!!! Did I mention that I had to fix Shrek's face with the icing that I had left and it wasn't quite the same shade of green????? I tried to mix it with the first shade of green that was left from the transfer but after sitting out for a little...it didn't really blend like it I wanted. YEP...it was BAD!!!!
