This is my first year of decorating (anything besides a character cake) and I cannot take this heat and humidity! And summer's not even here yet!! What am I gonna do?!?

I think I need an air conditioner for my kitchen. icon_cry.gif

I just thought of a question. Say I do have an air conditioner in my kitchen.......and then I deliver to a place that does not have a/c - would the cake be ok?! icon_confused.gif

Hey I am in MA too..... where are you? I did a cake today and ye sit was hot anf humid for it! I do not like the cold nor do I like the heat. However I would rather be cold than hot. An AC in your kitchen sure would help!
Good Luck!

The next ICES meeting in MA is in Nahant if you are intereste din coming let me know.

Hi!

I'm waaaaaaaay over in western MA! Right on the NY border. (The part of the state that everyone else seems to forget about, lol!)

Oh, I love the heat...and I love the cold! I love snowmobiling! But I'm liking the heat less and less realizing all that it does to my icings and fondants and everything!!! icon_cry.gif

I haven't attended any ICES meetings...yet...

We just moved into our own place and it needed some upgrades here and there, one of which was the light fixture in the kitchen. Instead of just a light I bought a 52" celing fan, on clearance at Walmart from $70 to $25.~ icon_wink.gif so I couldn't resist it... Anyway I also bought this things that you stick to the fan blades on top so no one really ever sees them... it collects the dust and doesn't let it fly anywhere even when full.... We keep it on high and it keeps the kitchen very cool. I've been debating putting a 220 outlett in and putting in a very large AC unit that would cool the entire downstairs but he won't do it lol I'm still trying to talk him into it lol. Anyway I do most of my decorating in the living room on a nice little table right now, plan to work on the dining room table once set up, and it gets so darn hot in the LR icon_sad.gif all I have in here is a small fan and I've begged him to bring the AC from our room down to the LR and take the one from the dining room up to the bedroom but he won't lol.... they are soooooo heavy! lol Anyway I think an AC or celing fan would help you ALOT in the kitchen!!! icon_biggrin.gif

OhMyGoodies...

You sound like me asking dh to do this and do that, LOL

We can't even put a ceiling fan in the kitchen!! It's got a drop ceiling...and if we had one of those fixtures, well...everyone would be hitting their head on it when they walked into the kitchen, lol. That fan sounds amazing though!!

I guess I'll have to start thinking about an air conditioner! icon_wink.gif

I'm in NH and feel your pain. BTW, I don't forget about western MA, I drive through it to get to PA. Are you off of 90? I think an AC would help tremendously.

Hey hey! I'm in Western Mass, too! mom2spunkynbug - you must be in the Berkshires! I'm in Granby, on the Hadley/Belchertown line. I know where you are! yes it's been miserable humid here and I have to make several cakes this week for next weekend - here's hoping it cools down a little! Think I could decorate the cake whilst standing in my pool? icon_wink.gif

Don't shoot me but I didn't realize you could still buy AC window units until I read this thread. I live in the south where central air and heat is a necessity. icon_smile.gif

I'm about as far east as you can get in the middle in MD below NY next to PA and DC and VA lol... it's sooooooooooooooo hot!!! It's only been in the mid 80's and low 90's recently but the humidity has been awful!!!!!!!! My mom's house has Central heat and air but not in the basement where we WERE living lol (finished basement very nice but not enough room for 3 ppl lol) so I've always had this problem but I really wish this old house had CAC lol I'd love it!!!!

This week it got so darn hot I was thinking about turning the shed out back into a huge walk in half fridge half freezer lmfao big enough for a table where I could decorate lol

I'm in TN and I wondered if my AC was even working today it was so hot. Whew, 100 degrees....I know we're headed that way but sure not looking forward to it and baking. LOL...I keep a fan in my kitchen when I can (sometimes things happen). Hope you can get that AC, I'm sure it would help tremendously

It's already hot and humid here too. Last summer, my DH and I managed to buy a house (the market here is NUTS!!!) The only things I insisted on were 1. a kitchen with potential and 2. Central air. I got both, and what a difference when I'm baking. AHhhhhh..it's the little things that make us happy. icon_biggrin.gif

believe it or not, I've found that a lot of places don't have central heat and air... I've lived in NC most of my life, and if you don't have both, you're miserable for most of the year. We have two seasons... winter and summer. There are about three days between them, that are nice, but generally, it's either hot or it's cold. (Unless we're talking about the last two years, when it's been so darn mild that really, we just had a week of winter, and mostly it was either summer or spring.)

But yeah... there are a lot of people who don't have air conditioning as a matter of course... most of us southern folks do, because we'd be absolutely miserable without it. icon_razz.gif

Mom2spunkynbug,
I too am from MA. My DH says the only move he would make is north, he's far enough south. I can't stand the humidity. I wanted to try some fondant/gumpaste this weekend but, because of the humidity I didn't.
Hopefully it will cool off some this coming week, after all it's only June, we're not supposed to get the humidity until July and August.

You know what's funny, I really AM moving to Alaska! It's not all that hot today here in Texas, but I delivered a cake to a country club this afternoon where even the man who works there said he hoped the cake didn't melt... They had me set up the chocolate groom's cake with chocolate dipped strawberries in front of a sunny window! My husband is trying to figure out a way to convince the brides that November is a much better month for weddings than June!

DoniB:
icon_lol.gif We had about 2-3 days of winter last year and so far, no spring! I've had an August tan since March.

I'm not young, closer to 50 than 40, and I never knew everyone didn't have AC! Guess you really do learn something everyday!

Have any of you that are having humidity problems tried the Sweetex (hi ratio shortening) in your icing recipes? Just a thought.

I'm in MA too. right outside Boston, and I was going to do some baking today, but changed my mind once I woke up and realzed it was so humid. I would love an ac for the kitchen but DH won't do it. Guess I'll be doing a lot of my decorating in the diningroom. Oh by the way DH has yet to put in the ac units in any room. I'm dying icon_confused.gif

Wow i cant b elieve how hot it gets over there! Here in NZ we complain if it gets up to 24 degrees cel, thats normally pretty hot!!!! Mind u our winters are pretty mild compared to yours as well. Were just starting autum and average temp is about 12 degrees.... Winters are normally 4-8 degrees....

Guess were pretty lucky on that side with cake decorating in mind icon_smile.gif

My family just moved to WI ... actually nine months ago today ... well we moved from TX and my biggest problem was having my cakes melt ... outdoor weddings above 100 were my lot it seemed. This past winter in WI (which would have been spring in TX) I had to do a cake and I had a problem with my icing getting too cold!!!! That was a first for me! Had a cake today ... 73 degrees - seemed like decent cake weather so I may be blessed when I do two cakes this fall (the times I usually dreaded!) By the way, Alaska still sounds great though!!!

Why is it that I am in sunny California and it barely got to 65 degrees today? We get the "June Gloom" where it is foggy and breezy . . . good for decorating, but doesn't feel like summer! Frost on! icon_biggrin.gif

Oof. We don't have any air conditioning either. We were up to 90ish today and get well into the 100s plenty during the summer. And my son has his birthday they 27th of July!! I remember when he was born it was after the hottest week of the summer 6 or 7 days of staight 100+ heat. I don't know that I am looking forward to that cake anymore...Yeah, baking at midnight is what I'll probably be doing.

LOL! Wow, I guess it always seems greener on the other side of the tracks. I'm up here and can't wait to get down to the South.
I got stuck inside my house the other day and was late delivering a cake because I had a moose on my front walkway. Not to mention our neighborhood bear here on base.
We have 2 seasons here: snow and 2 months of summer. Last year it rained most of August, so I didn't count it.

I'm here in AZ where there is hot summer from April till November and then one day of winter, and following that is "not so hot" summer from January to March. So, like dolphin, no baking after 7:am. So I've got to get up really early to bake and freeze until the cakes are needed.

Small world, huh?! LOL Yes I am in the Berkshires! What kind of weather are we getting already?! I have to make a cake (or two icon_confused.gif ) for my bil, a cake to donate to my dd's school, and a cake for my dd all next week/weekend!!! I hope it cools down too!

Hey, if you do decorate while standing in your pool...be sure to get a pic of that...I'd love to see it, LOL icon_lol.gif

Wolfey....that is too cool! Getting stuck in your house because of a moose! (I know you're not thinking that way though!)

No, we have no central air up here in New England...there really isn't a need for it. Usually it doesn't get really hot or humid up here until July and August. icon_confused.gif

I don't think I could not bake between certain daytime hours!! I don't know how some of you do it!

I got really frustrated the other day with my homemade fondant....it was so hot/humid out it wasn't behaving properly icon_mad.gif

It is interesting to hear about everyone's "situations!"

you all crack me up!

I'm up in Vancouver BC and just like 0TNIC we rarely get above 24 - 25 celcius and on the weekend it was 30 and I was complaining.

I don't know how you do it! At least I don't have the added stress of cakes melting!

And yup, I've never lived in a place with Central Air. For the few weeks a year we'd need it it isn't worth it. I even have a car without air conditioning!!
