I have a wedding cake, originally it was fondant, but they changed to buttercream, but still want the ribbon. It's very humid here and the cake is going to sweat. In combo with the grease and the sweating am I going to have big problems with the ribbon? Should I tell them no we need to go with a different option. It's going to be added at home and will be on the cake most of the day. Any help would be appreciated.

Could you do a fondant ribbon instead?

You can cut a strip of waxed paper the EXACT same size as the ribbon and wrap that around the cake first (use buttercream to hold the seam together) Then put your ribbon over that. However, be warned that if its going to be in any kind of heat the edges of your ribbon may still absorb some of the grease from the buttercream.

i put a ribbon on this cake and it's butter cream. only one tiny spot of grease came thru and i put a shell on it! LOL. i think the trick is... don't press the ribbon on. i attached it in the back with some icing and just put it around by holding the end and wrapping.. no pushing it on.... then just adhere it in the back.

You could always use a pretty satin or sugar dough ribbon.

The customer is supplying the ribbon so I have no idea what it looks like. She is an acquantance of mine and I gave her a good deal, so if the ribbon doesn't work out I don't think she'd really care that much. I'm just worried because I have cascading leaves going up the side of the cake and over the ribbon, so if the ribbon starts to stain there won't be any way to get the leaves back off in order to get the ribbon off. I did a practice cake and once you put the fondant onto the buttercream it is there forever, I tried to pull the leaves off to serve the cake and it took all the icing and some of the cake off with it. Shes suppose to get me the ribbon a couple weeks before the wedding, maybe I'll do another practice run????
