For those of you that did the Spiderman cakes, what did you use to get your icing so red? = )

I am having trouble getting darker colors out of my icing...some say that the Americolor colors work better for that, anyone got anything else to share on that one?

Thanks for your time,
Mixee

Americolors are great... There is a company called Dawn or dawns something and they make a red icing off the top of my head I dont know the link maybe someone else will know what I am talking about and can post the link...

Is this it Ladycake? This is where the Kroger bakeries around here buy their supplies from http://www.dawnfoods.com/

AmeriColor does work a lot better than Wilton and won't give you any aftertaste that even no-taste red will if used in large amounts. You still have to use a lot though. Just keep adding your choice of red until it's close...still light but really close. Cover and let it set a while. The red should deepen.

Oh this cake was fun! I did one of these Spiderman cakes for my twin nephews ... I used Americolor for the red... You'll just have to use a whole lot of Wilton red to get the color you're needing ..

I'll never use the Wilton red again .. Americolor is the only way to go for me icon_smile.gif

So you can acheive the darker colors (esp red & black) with the Americolors, and you use less of them? I wish I would have known that before I bought a bunch of Wilton colors...LOL! Not to mention they come in squeeze bottles, how convenient! I am all over this one.
Are these essentially something I can only find online?

Thanks all!

I use the Betty Crocker dark colors. Don't have a bad after taste, mix in very smooth with my BC icing and give a deep color in seconds. Not even Black color have an after taste. I buy them at Shop Rite supermarkets. icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif

Most cake shops should sell them (not Michaels etc) ours is always out of the larger 8oz bottles and just have the little 1.25oz bottles. I tend to go through the little ones. I have bought them online, probly the best way to go If you are not near a cake supply store. My mom travels so I have her go to the cake supply stores in whatever city she is in with my shopping lists every couple of months. We have a cake supply store but they can't carry everything. She picks me up 6-8 8oz bottles of Super Red and Super Black at a time, it lasts me awhile but I will not take the chance of running out in the middle of a project. Been there, done that.

I order my Americolors online ... there is no aftertaste from them... you can achieve the darker colors you want.. it's the best of both worlds icon_smile.gif

Americolors is a brand of coloring. They produce nice vibrant colors and you don't need to use a lot to get true colors. Once I tried them I never went back to Wiltons colors. Not sure where you can get them in Canada. I get them from my local cake shop. You might want to try http://www.globalsugarart.com
