Hi,

I have the Wilton Gold dust and I mixed it with clear vanilla, but when I paint in on the fondant it doesn't look gold, instead it's blotchy and kinda gooky. I don't know how else to explain, it's grainy, it looks more like sand than smooth gold which is what I'm going for.

Please help.

Alex

Do you have the shimmer dust or the pearl dust?

The shimmer dust is courser and is not made to paint on like luster dust. It is used more for sprinkles.

That's the problem. I just looked and I have shimmer dust. Rats!!

I guess I need to go out tomorrow and get some luster dust. What is the amount of liquid that I should use? And is water ok or it has to be vanilla?

Thanks,

Alex

I wouldn't mix it with Vanilla. It doesn't have enough alcohol in it. Mix your dust with either Vodka or Lemon extract. I like the extract best because the oil helps to defuse the gold dust evenly.

When you use luster dust to paint, the liquid that you use should evaporate quickly, hence the use of extracts or vodka. I would not use water.

Add enough liquid to make paint consistency. If the consistency is too thin, you will not get the color even, and if it's too thick, you will get globs. Play with it and see what works.
