I'm going crazy trying to make a large drape for a 3 tier dummy cake. Im using 50/50 gumpaste/fondant. the mix seems nice and stretchy. When I pick it up it seems nice. then i place it on the cake, over the top so it drapes down to the top of the bottom tier. then after about 2 minutes it starts stretching on the top tier and rips. i believe that is where the drape bears the most stress. but i've seen it done and i dont know if there is some big thing i'm not aware of. the gumpaste happens to be almost 3 months old, but it seems good and soft. I tries glucose, glycerine more tylose, different fondant. how do you do it? icon_confused.gif

I use foam or gauze to prop up the drapes and hold it in place while it dries

Try adding more gumpaste or some GumTex (Wilton) or if you have some tylose (either just 1/4 tsp). When doing long drapes the more gumpaste helps keeping the stretching from happening. Or another thought would be let the piece air dry 10 minutes before placing on the cake. The drying might help keep it from stretching.

Letting it air dry for a bit does help a lot. But dont let it dry too long or it will crack when you try draping it. Your best bet is to give it about 10 minutes like dct said and then hang it. It also doesnt hurt to prop it up with something until its completely dry after you do drape it. I tend to stay away from the Gumtex. Tylose works really well for me. I just never liked the smell of the gumtex.

It sounds like your fondant/GP might be rolled too thin. Try making it thicker and you shouldn't have that problem.
