I am doing a cake that will have an edible picture of a swimming pool on it and wanted to add some other things to it like palm trees and maybe some of those little umbrella picks. Does anyone have any ideas on how to make palm trees out of buttercream? Also, any other ideas as to what to add to this cake? This is just a cake for some ladies having a pool party. Thanks for any suggestions. This site is just great! Janice

To make Palm Trees .... GET some of them long rod pretzels and a left tip and your green buttercream frosting and your going to make leafs on the pretzel to make it look like a palm tree...

You could add some fondant accents like a towel, raft, innertube...someone made the cutest cake that even had a little tiny pair of flip-flops on it. Wish I could remember more about that cake but that's all that stuck.

Thanks for the ideas ladies! I'll see what I can do out of fondant--haven't used fondant only to ice an cake--but maybe I can at least make a towel and innertube out of it. I'll post my picture of it IF it turns out nice. Thanks, Janice

I had great success with chocolate covered pretzel rods and fondant leaves. I cut the leaves and dried them over a paper towel tube (slightly flattened). My cake is in the gallery. I think there is a close up if you look under the fondant figurines sections.

Thank you Victoria. I would very much appreciate a step by step. I'm more of a visual person that needs to see a step by step and not an artist at all. The cake isn't due until Sunday, so I'll probably start baking on Saturday and probably start playing around with some fondant tomorrow. I've only covered a cake in fondant once and don't know how long it will take to dry leaves made out of fondant. Maybe Kay can answer that one??? Thanks to you both for the help! Janice

OOps, I meant maybe KarenOR might know how long it takes to dry the fondant leaves. Also, KarenOR what type of cutter did you use for the leaves? I wonder which way would be easiest--the fondant leaves or buttercream? I think I'll have to try buttercream first after I get instructions from Victoria. Thanks, Janice

The leaves took a few days to dry. I wouldn't use them until they were really hard. I also brushed on a layer of chocolate underneath, to help keep them hard. It really was pretty easy.
I just used a leaf cookie cutter and then made little slits to look like palm leaves.

Thanks KarenOR, your jungle cake is terrific! I do have another question for you. Did you do anything special to hold up the pretzels? I'm making a sheet cake and may have to cut off the pretzels so they won't be so heavy and so tall. Thanks, Janice

Nope, because I had 5 layers for them to stand in.

One thing I forgot to mention was that when I did the pretzels, I made them sit in little puddles of chocolate, so that when I turned them over, the leaves had a base to be attached to.

Thanks KarenOR for all the info! Ladycake, I would still like to see your instructions on your palm trees when you get the chance. I'm thinking the big pretzel rods with fondant covered leaves will be too heavy to stay put in a sheet cake. Maybe the smaller stick pretzels with buttercream or royal icing leaves might work better. That's all I would need is the palm trees to come crashing down into the edible image of the pool and ruin everything. I don't think I would get any new orders from that cake. lol. Thanks, Janice
