What is a bench scraper? (a cake tool, a handyman tool, or what)
Where is it sold?
you can get a bench scraper at any kitchen gadget stores......they're usually used to scrape up doughs for breads and so on off of the counter while you're kneading them if they get stuck.......some people use them to frost their cakes.....a good and cheaper substitution would just be a large spackling knife found in the hardware store......makes icing cakes a breeze. The 6" metal one in my opinion works the best.
I have a fun story about my bench scraper, if anyone is interested ...
Hubby and I bought it in an antique store on our honeymoon in Santa Cruz, CA, 25 years ago. I had no idea at the time why I wanted it or what to do with it, I just had to have it. Maybe we paid two bucks for it. It was obviously well-used and well-loved, whatever it was.
When our girls were little, I used it twice/week to scrape the counter down after I'd kneaded the 3-loaves-worth of whole wheat bread dough I'd just made.
When our girls were older, we used it to scrape the paint across the silk screens we'd created to print the line of t-shirts and clothing we were selling.
Now that our girls are grown and I'm practicing to make eldest daughter's wedding cake, I use it to scrape the fondant off the counter.
That funky $2.00 purchase has become a most-treasured heirloom that I will bequeath to middle daughter who is about to graduate from culinary school. (And besides -- it's HER KA that I use to make my cakes
)
Whoever knew the tales that would come about from a bench scraper
.
