My niece and nephew just turned one (they are twins). I was supposed to make the cake for their party, but a couple weeks before the party, their mom and I were talking about what kind/theme cake to make. She decided on a rubber ducky theme. So, my wheels started turning, thinking of so many ideas. Well, we got to talking some more, and she says Byerlies gives free cakes for first birthdays. Well, since I would have to travel 3+ hours for the party, I said, well, why don't you get the free cakes, and I'll make special smash cakes for them. OK, fine, that's what I did.
So I make two rubber ducky smash cakes (in my photos), and she has two 1/4 sheet cakes from the store decorated in the ducky theme. It was pretty warm that day, but not extreme. Maybe low to mid 80's. Anyway, people start arriving for this big 1st special birthday, and everyone says how cute my cakes are. About a 1/2 hour into the party, the store cakes were TOTALLY melted! The frosting was sliding off all the sides, it was even running off the top! (They were in the house with the air on) My cakes....didn't budge! I was so proud! And my Aunt says "Gee, that's not right, Byerlies are known for the cakes!...yours even tastes so much better." That made me feel even better. I just wanted to share a little boost of confidence I had this weekend. ![]()
Yup, all buttercream (half shortening, half butter recipe), except the "bubbles" were made from MMF. So funny too, because when the two were digging into their cakes, the boy picked off the "bubbles" one by one and threw them on the ground! The girl just dug right in!! Too cute!
