Im determined to get gumpaste down! Im so frustrated with it . I have tried making it homemade with the wilton gum text and i have also tried the gumpaste mix i got at my local cake supplie store but the gumpaste is way to sticky and no matter how much 10x sugar or cornstarch i add still way to sticky! is there a certain brand better than the other? TIA erlyn
I am new at the whole gum paste thing and just finished my first bd cake using flowers I had made out of gum paste. I used the wilton gum tex with the wilton glucose and then followed their recipe on the back of gum tex can and found it to be sticky as well. I did however find that if you coat the surface of your hands or the area you are rolling it out on with shortening(lightly) it helped alot! I dont know if that helps but I was able to work with the paste great after that.
good luck

I'm new to gumpaste and would like to know as well. I've used the wilton brand and when it's sticky, I've just added a little Crisco to my fingertips and it seems to help. I usually where latex gloves while I do this because I'm usually coloring it.
I like Satin ice gumpaste, its a premade paste and works well for me. Second choice from whats available is the new wilton premade it works fairly well and is reasonable priced.
IF i need a really dark color paste i make my own.
only cause pre colored premade paste isn't available locally here.
I've done alot of work with gumpaste and I've found that dusting with Powdered Sugar works best. Try dusting your hands before you knead it, then dust work surface and any tools, should help alot. I also use Corn Starch. Too much CS will dry it out and will make it difficult to roll. I think it so soft it makes the gumpaste slip all over my mat. Never tried shortening except with fondant, and I'm wondering if it effects the drying. I have used premade and mixes and liked them both. A word of encouragement, just keep trying its such a wonderful medium to work with. And well worth the effort of learning, once you get it right you will be happy you did.
