One of my dearest friends jokingly said that i wouldn't be a cake superstar in her eyes until I did an igloo entirely out of either fondant or marzipan (don't ask icon_rolleyes.gif ) no cake mound etc. Her birthday is next Thursday and I had a whole penguin scene planned, igloo and all. The trouble is, I don't seem to be able to construct a decent igloo. I either have a solid mound with painted lines which looks wonky, or I cheat using a bowl. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated! icon_cry.gif

Does pastillage count? You can mold that over a bowl, imprint the lines, let it dry

Can you use rice krispies under the fondant? Or is that not allowed too?

mix some fondant and gumpaste to make it hard and mold it over a bowl. Thinking crazy here. To impress her so she will always call you a master, you could run a light in it, put some eskimos sitting around a fire. Then that would teach her.

Oh wow alibugs, I LOVE your line of thinking. And also build a water slide for the pinguins with running water. i see the cake in my head, ..... but no idea how to make it work. I flunked science

I don't understand why you can't mold the igloo over a bowl, then remove the bowl once the igloo sets up. Or, under a bowl, if it will be solid. I'd use the side of a toothpick or skewer to impress the lines. This is going to be so cute! Can't wait to see it.

I am thinking it would be very simular to making the hood of a basinette. I have done that, covered a ball in saran wrap and then molded my gumpaste/fondant over it. When it was dry, it popped right off.

And please post a photo of this masterpiece -- you can also use twinkle lights inside the igloo! icon_biggrin.gif
