Hi everyone,
I have read on here several times the best way to learn gum paste flowers is to take a class..well I never thought I could do that because I live in a small rural town in Central PA. But last night discovered that there is going to be a class about an hour away from me with Kim Morrison who apparantely was on the food network challenge. The class says "no beginners please" so I called them and explained to them my situation(that I have decorating some cakes, but am still a beginner) and they said Icould def take the class..they just want people who have tried decorating somewhat. I'm just a little unsure of what to do. I'm still trying to perfect getting layering perfect and perfectly smooth icing..so I'm not sure if I could handle this or not. But I'd love to know how to do this.. It's $165 for an all day class. What do you guys think??

Can you call them back and ask what you should know before taking the class? If they start mentioning things that you think are easy then you know you would be fine. By the way, where is it being held?

Kim Morrison won three times at the Oklahoma Sugar Art Show..
Her cakes look fantastic to say the least.. You are learning from the best so make the most out of it. $165.00 is reasonable. If it was a Wilton Instructor, I wouldn't pay $50.00 for just a one day class.

That's really nice. icon_smile.gif

The class is being held at "Now we're cooking" in Williamsport PA. They don't have a lot of information yet about the class..it isn't until Sept. 19. So all they said is that she just wanted people who have some kind of decorating background. I think the price is definitely worth it..I'm just concerned that it may be all over my head at this point. I've never taken any classes yet on decorating so I dont' even know what to expect. I just know I really want to take it and know how to make gumpaste flowersicon_smile.gif

Definitely take it! How many opportunities will there be for you to do this again? proably almost none.

I kick myself in the butt all the time because i live 1 hr from the CIA and 2.5 hrs from NY. But will probably never take a class. If you have an opportunity take it.

Just looked at your cakes -- You are not a "Beginner". Your cakes are great. I think they are trying to discourage people who "think" they want to decorate cakes. I say Go for it with confidence!

Gum paste and frosting are different. I would have no trepidation about your skills in cake decorating, go learn something new that will enhance what you are already doing.

I think you should go for it! I saw Kim Morrison's work on Food Network and it was outstanding. (She also seemed pretty down to earth) I think $165 seems pretty reasonable too.

Hey Heiser73,

Do you have anymore info on the class? Like a web site. At that price and location I might consider going!

Hi!

I've had the fortunate experience to meet and speak with Kim in April back at the PA day of sharing and again at the MD show. What a wonderful woman and very insightful.

She's a professional decorator but she's the first person to laugh at herself when she makes a mistake.

Go, enjoy the class...you won't be sorry.

HTH!
Peggy

Kim is a two time winner back to back and a very talented lady! I spoke with her at OSSAS back in October. She won the first year and second year she competed. If you win two times in a row you bow out the the next competition. Take the class!

I met Kim at the OSSAS in Oct. She was SO encouraging to me as a beginner. We were both in the Clematis and Jewelry Box competition. ( Hers was unbelievable.) I looked at the flowers she was teaching and they are right on par with beginning gumpaste. Not only should you take the class but I'm sure you will do very well!

I don't know about this class, but many require you to buy a couple hundred dollars of cutters and molds and other materials. Many provide the tools or share between students. You will want to purchase some items anyway, so just think about that when you are considering the cost (still very worthwhile!)
