My sister said she wants 14, 10 and 6 round stacked tiers, and a couple of sheet cakes. The 14 can be a dummy. She's planning on cake for 100 people. I'm not worried about having enough cake...because of the sheet cakes...but I'm worried the cake will look too small, not enough impact etc.

She wants the cake to be a focal point of the reception, but also be simple...

What do you all think? Any help would be great!!! Thanks!

I dont' think it would look too small. If you want it to look bigger, make the tiers tall (6" or so)!

I have seen some really creative ways that people on this site have made their cake look bigger by placing it on a cake stand/board/glass blocks/etc. By having the cake sit higher up off of the table, in my opinion makes the whole cake look bigger!

I don't think it will look too small at all. I've only done one wedding cake so far, but it was 6", 10", and 14" hearts, approx. 4" high for each tier. The cake is in my pictures. By the time you stack it all up, it makes a good size cake, not gigantic, but not small by any means, either.

I'm doing an 8",10",and 12" and I don't think it will be too small. If you want it to be "bigger" looking, maybe put it on a nice size cake stand and elevate it off of the table. Also, if you're doing the stacked cake and two sheet cakes you're going to have way more than 100 servings. I'm doing the 8",10",and 12" stacked plus an extra 8" and 10" and this is suppose to feed 150.

I delivered a groom's cake to a reception on Friday. I didn't make the wedding cake but it was three round tiers (6", 10", and 14") stacked and then placed on a cake base. I don't really know how to describe it other than as a big wicker box. It sounds kind of funny but it was absolutely gorgeous. I wanted to take a picture but I felt kind awkward taking a picture of someone else's cake.

I agree with some of the previous statements...a nice cake base can make it look taller and more elegant.

Good luck!

If she wants more of an impact, instead of sheet cakes, could you do simple sattellite cakes instead? The big cake would still be the focal point but the sattellite cakes would make a big impact.

That was the size of my wedding cake. My cake person put it on a pedistal that she got from the reception place and they covered that with a tablecloth (white like the cake) it made the cake look much taller and it stood out more. They did it so it looked almost like another tier.

14' is big. Just make sure your tiers are at least 4" high.

You can use pillars to heighten it, or the styrofoam platforms to separate the tiers.

The cake display platform is a good idea. There is a thread where people gave ideas --some very inexpensive--for cake stands.
