I tried the dream whip icing recipe from this site,
2lbs of conf sugar
2 cups crisco
1/2 c boiling water
1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp vanilla
1 tbs corn syrup
2 tbs flour
whip till fluffy where the directions

I tried this and it was gritty! I had to throw away the entire batch!
First question is should I have put this together in any particular order? Any suggestions would be great.
I am still in search of my "perfect" buttercream and I was very excited about this and the end result was very disappointing.

Second question has to do with the wilton snow white buttercream. I have always used this and for some reason this weekend it was sweating(I guess that is the right description) I did not refrigerate but it had mositure on top of the icing. I live in Texas and yes it is VERY humid here but the cake was inside and the air was on cooling the house the best it could.
Has anyone ever had this happen to them?

My daughter's birthday is this weekend and I would love some suggestions before making my icing for her cake.
Thank you in advance.

Hi Stacy,

When I make this icing I do it in this order:

Crisco, salt, vanilla and water in a bowl and mix well. Then I add the pkg of Dream Whip and corn syrup and mix that in. Then I slowly add the powdered sugar until it's mixed. At the end I add any flour that's needed but I usually don't need much at all.

Hope that helps.

Try this dream whip recipe. It is entitled "Butter cream icing" and if you search using 'dream whip' as your keywords it will pop up. I've made this a few times with great results.

Butter Cream Icing
Serves/Yields:
Prep. Time: 15min.
Cook Time: N/A
Category: Frostings
Difficulty: Easy

This recipe with ice and decorate a 2" 9x13" cake. Also I use a Kitchen Aide stand mixer with the stainless steel bowl and attachments. (I believe the bowl makes a difference) I always put my bowl and wisk attachment in the freezer for about 5 mins. before I start. (I have noticed that the weather really effects the consistancy, so you might have to add more or less powdered sugar to get the consistency that you like to work with)
1 packet of Dream Whip
1/2 C. Cold Water
2 cap fulls of Vanilla
2 cap fulls of Butter Flavor (can substitute w/ 1TBS of butter)
2 C. Creamed Shortening
2lbs. Powered Sugar
First take bowl and wisk from freezer
Pour entire packet of Dream whip into bowl
add water, vanilla, and butter flavor.
Mix on low until combined
Then on high until it looks like whipped cream (about 4 mins.)
Turn off mixer and add shortening
Turn mixer on Low until combined scrapping sides as needed
Once combined turn on high until completely mix
Finally "SLOWLY" add powdered sugar on "LOW" until completely mix.
(if you dont you will be in a cloud of powdered sugar) LOL
Now you are ready to ice and decorate
