I am doing accessory pieces for a police themed cake (handcuffs, badge etc.) and am making them from MMF. The cake was ordered for June 7th which is one week from today and I am curious to know a few things....

1. Will it be dry in time?

2. How long do I need to wait to paint on it?

3. Can I paint them before I put them on the cake, will the paint dry so I can move them to the cake without any smudges?

TIA, I am very excited for my first paid (non friend or family) cake in a while and several more orders on the way!!! I appreciate all your help!

if you start now it will give you pleanty of time for drying.
I would use 50/50 mmf and gumpaste or add some tylose to the MMF so it dries well.

Wait until it's dry to paint and yes it is much easier to paint and let dry before you attach it to your cake!!

If you have small or fine pieces ....make at least to ...to allow for breakages!!

Thank you so much for your help! I am a bit concerned because my local cake decorating supply store is out of tylose right now and I really dont like to use gumpaste because I want people to enjoy eating these pieces. From what I hear, gumpaste is pretty gross. Do you think they will dry okay if they are just mmf???

If they are dried, people won't be able to eat them anyway, because they'll be too hard.

Wow, I didnt even think about that icon_redface.gif

I never did that before and just figured they should be dry so they dont 'wilt' on the cake if I want to put them near or off the edge. Good point so maybe I will mix 50/50. Out of curiosity though for the future, will mmf dry on its own or it needs something else?

Fondant will dry on its own.

MMF does need something to help it dry. I waited almost 2 weeks for my Wilton class rosebuds to dry to the point where I could put the rest of the petals on. I gave up, came on here, asked and was off to buy some Gum-tex, cause without it, I was screwed.

I added the gum-tex, made some roses and in 2 days they were ready for the next layer of petals.
