I would love to do a 3-D Rottweiler cake for a friend here at work for her b-day. She has been a very good friend to me - especially when my little dog died a few months back. She works very hard at a dog rescue organization where she herself adopted a Rottie. I would love to do a 3-D Rottweiler cake, but I have never done a 3-D dog cake and was wondering if anyone could help me out on how to do it, pans to use, etc. I would so appreciate it, because i would really love to make this cake special for her. Can anyone help me?
I don't know how to make any 3-D cakes yet. But I am guessing that you might have to stack and carve the cake to get what you want. Or do a trace and fill in. Sorry I can't be of any help BUT I would like to see it when you get done. I have 2 rotty girls and had 1 male until he died last year--he wa 13! Good luck with your project.
I made a 3-d terrier (in my photos) with help from HollyPJ.
I made 2- 9-inch round cakes, and also used 2 pyrex bowls and made two small cakes in there round enough for the head and butt.
I then just carved all the cakes into different shapes until it looked like a dog's body. I used buttercream and used the #233 grass tip to put on the "fur".
For the eyes and nose, I molded them out of black fondant and used some luster dust to make the eyes and nose stand out a little more. (in the picture, it looks likes it's glowing!)
If you do "fur" you may want to do it alot shorter than mine or cover it with fondant and spray color onto it if you have a sprayer.
I had with me a picture of the dog so I had some sort of reference.
I hope this helped a little. Let me know if you have any other questions!
My mom also works with the Rottweiler rescue and she ended up adopting her foster puppy.
I would probably stack up two sheet cakes and then add a half ball or half egg on top for the roundness....or else just put another layer on, and then carve. Then cut the head and legs. I kind of forget exactly how I did the head but this is how I did my basset hound cake and it worked pretty well. I covered that one with fondant but I've also done puppies with #233 tip "fur"...depends if you want to use fondant.
Having pictures to look at while carving and decorating always helps me so much! I usually take out a couple books from the library for reference.
Good luck!
Courtney
Too bad I couldnt email you my tivoed Ace of Cakes when they did the Shepard. But the thing you need to do is build a platform for the head if you are going to have it in a sitting position. It would probably be a lot easier if you do a laying dog. Then you could use dowels to hold up everything. I would definetly use fondant and if you want to, get some spray chocolate for the brown and maybe some of the Wilton black spray unless you have an airbrush.
Good luck and dont forget to send pictures!!
