Tres Leche cake is a big favorite amongst our friends and family and i was kind of considering it for my sons bday party. But can it be decorated? Ive only ever seen it with whipped cream or meringue. We're having a tpy story party so obviously i want the cake to match the theme. Anyone ever decorate a tres leche cake ?

(I would look in the pic archive but i cant search anymore !)

I have never decorated one before but I have heard here on CC that it can be done. Try searching the "forum" for threads about Tres Leche and you will probably find some decorated cakes there.

There's one in my photos but its so simple I dont know if you'd even call it decorated. I think it could be decorated if you did not intend to do anything too elaborate. I dont think it would stack well because its so wet. And you would probably want to use a whipped cream frosting, but there are some that have the stabelized whipped cream. I dont know what tpy is but I think you can pull it off.

Im not a baker so i have no clue about any of this I guess it would have to minimal and just out the toy story figures on it. can the whipped cream be dyed? To atleast make it somewhat colorful? I dont want it to just be white ?

My biggest problem in doing tres leche cakes has been finding a board, pan, etc that I don't mind parting with (ordered cakes) that will hold in all the milk so it doesn't ease out the bottom! (Let me know when you solve that one!)

As far as decorating, I use my standard whipped icing (I use whip n top, similar to Pastry Pride or Rich's Bettercreme) for tres leche, this way I can do borders, writing, etc. with no problems.

There is a photo posted in the gallery that is a tiered sweet 15th or 16th that is a tres leche. Almost a wedding cake like feel. I saw it awhile back I will check when I get home tonight and PM if I find the link.

I can't open the window that will allow me to attach a picture but I have one in my gallery. It is the pink duck one. I did a round two layer tres leche w/ buttercream and BC accents. As long as you keep it in the fridge the milk will not ooze out. And mine was REALLY REALLY REALLY moist and milky. Sooooo good, I want a slice right now just thinking about it icon_smile.gif

I think that to satisfy both the theme and the love of tres leches, why not make a cake with the theme and mini tres leches for people to take home. You can make them in those little plastic shotglasses or aluminum 2oz cups. You can decorate those with meringue or chantilly on top.
Or sometimes you can soak tres leches overnight in the fridge and remove it from the pan where it's moist enough for the flavor and texture but not leaking.
