Does Anyone Know If This Is 1 Cake In 3 Layers Or 3 Cakes

And are most "professional" cakes 3 layers like this? I have been doing two cakes per tier. So it's just 2 layers. Should I be doing something different? Most pics I've seen look like this.

thanks

I will do this if it is a wedding cake. it is two cakes. Each of the cakes is torted and filled and then there is a layer of buttercream when you put the two cakes together.

It could be two cakes One cake torted and then buttercream between the two cakes put togehter. Or you could just bake three shorter cakes and do the same thing.

to my eye...

it looks like a 3" layer torted twice to get three 1" layers.

i've seen 2, 3 and even 4 layers at weddings and such.

it's all up to what you feel comfortable making/offering and what the customer wants.

Thanks for your help. Which way would be more stable? More cake right?

I was wondering the same thing. I also have been doing 2 cakes per tier. One 2" cake just doesn't seem tall enough so maybe the 3" would be a good solution?

I always torte my 3" cakes like that. I think the look of three layers looks nice.

looks like a 3" cake torted 2 times to me as well...plus that makes the most sense since least waste if you were only doing 3 layers.
I personally bake 2 2" cakes and torte each, therefore having 4 layers of cake 3 filling - but that's what I like to offer/eat!

I think it is a 3 inch cake torted twice also. I do this all the time. I even torte 3 times usually if I have enough filling. I havent done a wedding cake before, but I think I have read though that it might make it more unstable however.

There's not a wrong way to torte and fill a cake.

If you get the Whimsical Bakehouse book, you will find instructions to bake in 2 pans. 2/3 in one pan torted in half, then 1/3 in another pan. Baking time is less. I use this method quite a bit.

I watched Emril bake cakes on his show one day. It looked like the picture, but he baked three cakes and then stacked them together to get one tier.
