Counter Gunk? Since I've started decorating, just about everything in my house gets a daily mist of powdered sugar which is easy to take care of. My counter is another story. There is a continous gunky film no matter what I use to clean it. I've tried Soft Scrub, Baking Soda & Lemon, 409, Bar Keep, Mr. Clean, Fantastic, Borax, Clorox, Lysol, and loads of other cleansers. At first it looks clean, but when you run your hand across it-you can feel the yucky gunk. My counter top is Wilson Art's version of Corian and has always been a piece of expensive junk, but this is too much. The manufacturer suggests getting it refinished. Does anyone have a household tip or suggestions I could try? Any recommendation is greatly appreciated.

Hope this is in the right forum-it has something to do with decorating, but if it isn't, I'll try to move it. Thanks Much, Gail

I use a scrubber sponge the green & yellow kind. You have to really scrub hard, it usually works fine with that and hot water with dish washing liquid.

use a bowl scraper to try to scrape it off. thats what i do.

you could also try putting down some damp parer towels and leave it for a bit to soften up and then try the bowl scraper.

Hi Have you tried cleaning your counter with white vinegar and water. A cup of white vinegar to a quart of water should do it.

I don't know if this would work on your corian, but for my laminate/vinyl whatever cheap standard counter tops I have I use lysol 3-in-1 or Clorox kitchen spray, spray it down, let it soak several minutes (up tp 10), then scrape the stuck-on stuff with either a razor blade or a stainless steel dough cutter (when I'm out of razor blades). Then use lots of paper towels to mop it all up = it's the only thing that truly works and cleans it off for me.

I use simple green straight from the bottle or ultra dawn, let it set about 10 minutes then rinse off. I usually duct tape some trash bags together and cover my counters and table before I start a cake or icing that way all the mess can be rolled up and thrown away. (I use old newspapers also). I'm lazy the less I have to do the better.

Thank you all for your replies, the mess has been driving me absolutely mad. The biggest problem with this counter is you can't use anything with bleach, abrasives, harsh chemicals, and no hard scrubbie pads-it does nothing but scratch & discolor-I found out the hard way. After reading your posts, I think my problem is not letting it soak-I squirt, swipe & dry. Then I feel the gunk still there, and start all over. I'll stand there all night spraying, swiping and drying only to wake up in the morning & start over! I have the cleaners suggested, so I'll start using them again, only let them soak for a while. The garbage bag over the counter sounds pretty good though. I've never seen simple green, what is it and can I find it by other cleaners?

Thanks Again,
Gail

I get mine at home depot, it is an all purpose cleaner but it started out as a car cleaner. Cuts grease and gunk. You might be able to find it in the grocery store among the other household cleaners. I use it on every washable surface in my home including the shower and tub.

i use the scrapper from pampered chef...i didnt realize it at frist but than i started to feel a couple bumps of gunk... it was yucky.... so i started picking them off with the end of a ruler..... then found my scrapper and that works wonderfully. i just run it over the whole counter. it is a about a 3x3 square and mine is brown. it is supposed to be used for scrapping stuff off of stoneware baking pans. I have a marble table and it get like that too. I just put a very hot, damp, soapy kitchen towel on the spots and let them sit. Then I wipe the most I can with the towel and then with clean towel wipe it down. That has worked for me. Good luck.

Have you tried "Goo Gone"? It's made to remove adhesive gunk left from stickers and such. You should be able to find it at Walmart, and it should help with the gunky residue. Hope that helps!! icon_razz.gif

I have a corian counter top and i think it is so easy to clean. I just wipe down and make sure to rinse real well. To get ride of water spots (my countertop is black) i use pledge. It will make that counter shine like no tomorrow. There is a product called countertop magic that works well for getting ride of alot of grubby issues, i have only been able to find this at our local true value hardware store.

WE HAVE A PRODUCT CALLED "GREASED LIGHTING" ITS VERY CHEAP, ONLY A COUPLE OF BUCKS, SPRAYS ON. ITS A DEGREASER LIKE SIMPLE GREEN ONLY CHEAPER. I USE IT ON WASHABLES AS WELL. YOU MIGHT ALSO TRY SOME DENATURED ALCOHOL. BUT MAKE SURE YOU HAVE GREAT VENTILATION ????(SP) AND NO PILOT LIGHTS ON. IT MIGHT TAKE THIS TO GET IT SQUEAKY CLEAN AND THEN MAINTAIN WITH THE OTHERS. I KNOW THIS WILL SOUND CRAZY BUT THE NEW DUAL ACTION SPRAY AND WASH WORKS GREAT FOR ME ALSO. IT HAS THE "OXY CLEAN" IN IT. I THINK THIS IS A PROBLEM WE HAVE ALL HAD FROM ONE TIME OR ANOTHER. I HAVE VERY, VERY HARD WATER AND THIS REALLY MAKES FINDING GOOD CLEANING PRODUCTS A CHALLENGE. GOOD LUCK
ON YOUR MISSION.

Thanks for even more suggestions! Since I'm such an anal retentive clean freak, I'll get them all today and have fun cleaning! Can you imagine being excited to clean? I sound crazier by the minute.

Peg, in your Halloween Wedding Cake photo-is that your counter? Mine is just like that-it's now our 2nd Wilson Art (Corian Copy) counter-both have cracked, pulled away from the wall, scratched, etc. They replaced the 1st one at an extra cost & won't help with the 2nd. I've hated them since the day they were installed. Shows you the difference between real Corian-and take offs. In total now, we could have bought a granite counter for less.

Again, thanks for the help everyone.

Actually the haunted house cake is on my island and that is granite. We went with the corian cause of the intragrated sink (which i love) I do have a scratching problem with the countertop, but i'm trying to talk my hubby into bringing in the car buffer and some new car product that he just received (stuff this company wants him to sell) After reading the material on it, i think it will take out all the minor scratches in my countertop. We didn't go with the whole kitchen in granite cause my outside wall is warped and even though we have tried to fix it several times it just isn't quite right. But with the corain i have no gaps near that wall at all. The guys that made it really knew what they were doing.
