I've seen a few wedding cakes that have a glass vase or something along those lines that seperate cakes. how do you use them? has anyone ever tried it? it looks like they put a flower or figure in side of it. looks neat! just not sure how to do it.

Wow! I haven't seen one. It sounds really interesting. This will give you a bump so someone else might be able to answer.

Hey, I just had a bride order another one on these yesterday! When I make them;
A) dowel, plate iced cake as usual then cover cake in fondant. sounds odd to place fondant over your plate put this gives the illusion that the vase is just sitting on the cake.
B)The top cake has 1slightly smaller foam core plate glued to the vase. Use hot glue or similar, I like hot glue because you cake peel it off the vase later. Then when it is time to cut & serve the cake the top tier is removed from the vase plate for easy cutting.
C) Repeat the process for each tier.

The other method is Wilton's fluted bowl separator set. this is a simpler way do create the illusion. Personally it is to plain for my taste. The basic idea is the same only they have a small plate directly under the bowl, so it isn't hidden under the fondant. The illusion is a bit lost when you can see the plate but the effect is still there. You can use this method with any flat top & bottom container with out buying the Wilton set.

Thank you soooo much for the information. I've only seen it done a few times but not on this web site. I'd love to see some pics of those of you who have tried it.
