I have a flip flop cake next week and I am going to put sand down on the board around the flip flops. My question is how do I get the sand to stick without it sliding all over and off the board. I think I am going to use nilla wafters or graham crackers for the sand. I have seen many great flip flop cakes with sand so please help!
I used graham crackers for sand.l worked and looked great. I did notice tho, it seemsed to absorb the icing and get rather hard. I made a cake and cupcakes and the frosting on the cupcakes, kind of broke into pieces when you bit into it. Didn't affect the taste at all. good luck
I am going to make a beach cake in a couple of weeks. I am planning to use Lorna Doone cookies and piping gel.
i'm doing one friday, and plan on using piping gel, and then i bought this really great brown sugar, not regular sugar, but the large crystal cane sugar. its not as sticky or clumpy and it looks ALOT like sand grains. i am going to be putting white chocolate shells dusted with pearl dust scattered around.
When I use "sand" on my cakes or boards I usually brush a very thin layer of caramel frosting over the area with a pastry brush and then sprinkle the crumbs over it. When it dries the "sand" stays in place perfectly.
hey blairsmom, i have my cake posted now if you'd like to see the sand. the crystals were real nice looking - (thereis a close up too) . i just mixed a little water and piping gel together and brushed it onto the board then sprinkled the sugar on top. it turned out great. no icing peaking out.

Wow your sand looks great!!! Thanks so much for the help I am thinking about trying the sugar even though I already crushed the cookies that looks so real! Your flip flops are great, I just know that now I am not going to think mine look good because I have seen your wonderful ones!! Great job!
huh? hold your held high and be proud of your cake woman! ![]()
buy, YES! definately go for the turbinado sugar, it doesnt clump like plain brown sugar, and you wont get the chunks like with cookies. also, it kind of sparkles, and if you have gold pixie dust to put on top, oooooh, even better. in person this "sand" really glistened...it was cool.
it wont be a waste if you dont use the cookie crumbs, make a pie! ![]()
the large crystal cane sugar.
Did you get this in the regular grocery store? It's very pretty ... so crystally!
linda, yes, it came from super walmart. right in the same area as white sugar, powdered sugar, artificial sweeteners, brown sugar etc. it a 32 or 48 oz container for about 3 dollars. i used half of it to cover a 14x19 cake board fairly thick. you can also buy a box with single serve packets for less than a dollar. sorry i dont remember the brand
