I just made a doll cake using the Wondermold pan and the plastic doll insert. I followed the directions for icing the insert using BC. Then I tried smoothing with cornstarch. Ha!!! I kept pushing the frosting around instead, so it looks lumpy and uneven (see pic).
I always have a hard time using BC on these. Is it better to use fondant? If so, is there any prep needed to make it stick correctly? I really need to know because the cake is for my stepdaughter's B-day and I may already have 2 more orders for the same cake. Thanks in advance for any advice I get from all you wonderful and fantastic cake decorators. ![]()
Please feel free to browse my photos of doll cakes. I have only used fondant because of the fear of not getting the icing very smooth. But I always apply a crumb coat of icing, let that chill in the frig, apply a thicker coat of icing and then lay down the fondant. I also roll logs of fondant to lay under the skirt to give the impression of movement. Hope this helps and best of luck to you.
Just as you normally would before you insert the doll. Slice it, pipe a dam and lay down your filling, place top of cake on top of base. Ice buttercream, lay down the fondant, then insert the doll. If it is a full doll you will want to cover her body with a piece of saran wrap, it it is a doll pick you won't have to do that. Hope this helps!
