My cake supply store has been limited to the local Michaels until recently so all I really know are the Wilton products. I tried their fondant once and it was of course not a good experience so I wrote of fondant all together. Once I started looking around I noticed that nobody likes that stuff and am going to try the mmf & Satin Ice. So what other "non-Wilton" products out there are a must have or better than the Wilton equivilant? TIA!

Americolor food colors (they sell them here at CC), Magic Line pans, Agbay cake leveler, Satin Ice and FondX fondant...

I'm sure there are more that aren't coming to mind at the moment!

OH-oh-oh - don't buy Wilton's cake release!! Use 1 part flour, 1 part oil, and one part shortening. I put them in my food processor and then store it until I need it (it can keep for a long time, but I use it so much it wouldn't matter!)

My magic line and pfiel & holing pans are much thicker than the couple of wilton pans I have!

The wilton ribbon cutter is not very good, or so I've read, which is why I bought the FMM one and it works great.

definitely go with americolor icing colors. i can't figure out why wilton would sell icing colors that you have to scoop out with a toothpick of all things! its so difficult to do, you don't know how much you're getting, and you waste so many toothpicks, cause you can't double dip without risking your colors molding. i only ever go to michaels when i want to use their 40% off coupon for something big. for everything else i go to my local independent store. their employees actually know about cake decorating, unlike michaels, and they can recommend products to me.

I just read my earlier post......I think I hit submit before finishing what I was saying icon_redface.gif ...DH would love that function icon_lol.gif

I'm with everyone else .......Americolours are great, I have some other favourite brands but I'm not sure you can get them in the U.S. ......sugarflare, carolines are awesome!!
And from the U.K squires lusters and paints.....fantastic stuff.

as for tools I just got a PME set and wow (very expensive, luckily I didn't pay for them icon_biggrin.gif ) ...but I have to admit I started with a $4 set of tools and they work pretty well....thats all I have used until now. A good stylus, craft knife, manicure scissors and non-stick pizza cutter are all handy tools.

and metal flower cutters,,, I dont really like plastic ones as they don't give a really clean cut.

ok I think I have finished this time icon_lol.gif

Thanks so much for the tips ladies. I'm definitely going to try the Americolors. I hate scooping out the wilton colors! I think i'll look in to the magic line pans too as I need to invest in some sheetcake pans. Thanks!
