A while back, I asked for some help with making a 3D Elmo cake for my daughter's graduation:

My final plan is to make Elmo out of a Rice Krispie treat mixture, ice his Rice Krispie body smooth in royal icing, put a white fondant cap and gown on him. Then I'll ice any showing body parts (head, hands, feet) sticking out with red royal icing 'fur' (so that the fondant cap and gown won't be all bumpy from the 'fur' underneath.)
My question is about the fondant, since I have very little experience with the stuff. Her party is July 22nd (Saturday). How long in advance should I make the graduation gown for Elmo? Do I make it that day, so it drapes softly? Or do I want to do it a few days before so that it stiffens up a little?
Thanks, in advance, for the help I know I can always count on from everyone here! (If you have any other suggestions, they are ALWAYS appreciated!)
Oh.. one more thing! Do you think I should have him sitting, like in this photo? Or standing up, maybe holding a diploma?? I can't decide!
Here's a picture of the inspiration cake:
Do the fondant for the drape the day of,that way you can lay it just how it would lay naturally, it would look more realistic than having a stiff cape.
Good luck, this cake looks awesome!!!
I would keep him sitting just put his cape and gown on and have him holding his diploma.

do want it still soft when eaten...day of.
firmer, more chewy..day before or so
hard...two or more days.
It' will drape when first put on...and then start to harden.

sitting MUCH easier...lots of support issues when trying to make him stand up...especially if you want it to look like only his spindly little legs are holding him up. (not to mention more cake..bigger pieces
)
