How Do You Make Ice Cubes?

I want to make my husband a cake for his birthday. A cooler or bucket of beer. I have seen some awesome cakes on this theme here on CC and just wondered what the technique was for making ice. thanks for your help!

You could use clear rock candy for "crushed" ice. For cubes, the only thing I can think of is making clear hard candy cubes.

Never done this before, but would clear gelatin work? Just a thought....
