How To Insert Stick?

I now have made cookies on a stick twice by putting the stick in the dough and then baking them. However, I see some of you insert them afterwards. How do you do this? Does the stick go on the outside and then adhered with icing or some other way?
My cookies were for little ones and were cute but not WOW! However, they tasted good.
Thanks for your help in advance. I like to play with this doing my own cookies/cakes, but I have a lot still to learn.

I use the bamboo skewers so they have a little bit of a point on the end. I let my cookies cool on my cookie sheet for about 5 mins to help them set up. Then move to a cooling rack and insert my sticks. I twist my stick at the same time I am pushing it in and it seems to go into the cookie better. As the cookie cools it cools with the stick in it and I don't have a problem with the stick comeing out.

Sometimes I haven't put my stick through the center of my cookie so it was sticking out of the back a little, but I let cool completely, turned over and put a thin layer of white royal icing over the back. Let it dry and then decorate the front. Works great everytime!

ditto on leily's post- but I don't put the pointy end in- I use the pointy end to get the hole started, and then flip it around and shove the other end up. It takes practice to get it to not come out of the back. I just lay it flat on the cooling rack, and steady, steady...3/4 of the way up. They never come loose or fall out.

Thanks for the tips. I have more to bake tonight so I will try your way and see how it goes.
The only thing is I don't use royal icing, but I glazed them instead. I am just kind of playing with these to see what I like. The only problem is that they really are for gifts that have to be given by Friday night. So, really no time to waste.
I'm thinking of trying some of the mmf tonight as well just to see if I like it any better. I don't like the messiness of a glaze. Oh well, my students know I am not perfect. I think they will like them any way they are done. I just want them to look nice.
