I'm doing a unconventional baby shower cake in a few weeks and want to know if any of you have ever done similar writing. The person requesting emailed me a sketch of what they had in mind. I've never seen just the outline of letters on a cake before...at least not that I remember. Will it look ok??

Are you sure they just want the outline? Maybe that's just the way they sketched it?

I was not able to download your picture....but from your description "outline of letters"....I'm guessing what you mean.

I did a baby showere cake and used letter presses to imprint the words "baby boy" around the cake. It's in my pictures (sorry I'm at work and can't attach it here right now.)

Is this the effect you are going for? IF not, sorry, if so, I got these stampers at Michaels - they were for pressing concrete stepping stones.

Never mind....I was just able to open it.....I'd say you could do that as a royal icing transfer. Draw out your "font" then cover with waxed paper - then outline in royal icing....or you could do a FBCT......

very different indeed.

I think that it's totally doable. Are you doing the flag in a edible image or icing? For the edible image, I would say go ahead a print the outlined font directly on there, and then go over it in icing. If you're doing it in icing, you can still print out the letters using different fonts in royal and then carefully! transfer then on to the cake. In word, you can make fonts outlined, so you can play around and see what matches the closest.

If the customer wants lettering outlined, using white, in any medium of your choice, could provide a contrast visible against the cake. However, you might want to double check with the artist on outlined versus filled in. We have a few artist in our family and when doing rough drafts we simply draw. If there's any doubt just ask. icon_smile.gif

Did they say outline? I think they were just showing you how fat they want the letters.

I would write the letters solid with a round tube. If they want it out lined, then you can go around each letter with a skinny tip.

No, they want only the outline so that the cake colors show through. I'll be doing the flag in icing, not an edible image...don't have all the famcy equipment. icon_smile.gif

I was thinking it might be better to have the lettering cover less of the cake...what do you think?

How about making or forming the letters from fondant/gumpaste ahead of time, with time to dry and then just placing the letters on the cake?

Missey, are you thinking solid letters or cut outs? that's my true dilema at the moment. I wish I could see a picture of cake someone had actually done with just block letters outlined like that...

I made the whole top of the cake a FBCT.

I was thinking that you could make a long thin, rope like piece of fondant/gumpaste and shape it into the outline of each letter and let it dry.
