Hi. I am running low on time to shop for and make a birthday cake for my guy's 30th b-day. I was wondering if it is ok to use a boxed pound cake under an icing such as buttercream (and w/ fondant, if I have time to make and add the fondant). Boxed pound cake is pretty heavy, but I am unsure if it will work for decorating purposes. Thanks everyone!

I think if you are talking about a pre-made pound cake this would be great to save you time. Pound cake is dense and tastes good with buttercream.

Sara lee frozen ready-made pound cake is pretty good and you could use a flavored syrup to brush on and add more flavor. The Betty Crocker pound cake mix is good too

Hi! The pound cake box mix worked fine! I intended to use buttercream only for this, but must not have made the crusting kind because it would not smooth out (and stuck to the Viva paper towel instead). So I made some MMF, but I forgot to take some of the buttercream off before putting on the MMF, so it's very lumpy. I was in a hurry to get it decorated on schedule and made that stupid mistake. Anyway, here are some sombrero pics. It was a huge hit regardless of the lumpy look!
