Fondant Cakes, What Size Cake Circle?

Can I just put a cake to be covered in fondant on a bigger cake circle, or does the cake have to be the same size as the circle? If it needs to be the same size, how do you attach the boards together??
I have done 2 fondant cakes so far, both using the same size cake circle. I am having trouble with it-the buttercream is getting all over, I dont know how to attach them, it is difficult to move them around...
Hi merissa! I haven't done many fondant covered cakes but you can do it on a bigger board. What I have done is once i get the icing on the cake I used a damp paper towel to wipe up the excess around the cake then put the fondant on. It really helped me to crumb coat the cake before I put thefinal coat of icing on too.Not sure why it helped but I didn't make as much of a mess! You might be putting just a bit too much icing on the cake too-just a thought!
I think you might be putting too much buttercream on the cake before you put on the fondant. You could use a large cakeboard I guess. I usually end up picking up my cake to smooth well and tuck the fondant under a bit after I give it the final trim. If you are going to put a cake board on another, you can use a small peice of fondnat that you have wet slightly with water. Holds like glue. ![]()
Yeah, maybe I put too much BC on. I read where a few people said they just put their regualr amount on then the fondant. I guess I should just try less then. Thanks for the idea about the fondant glue! I will try that.
