What about using food coloring to tint buttercream icing? I have to make a cake with these cute bugs on it and they are neon. I bought Neon food coloring because I haven't seen them in Wilton. Help, PLEASE, I have to have this cake by in the morning. Thanks
I was told by my Wilton instructor that food coloring is watered down (not concentrated), so you may have to use a lot of it. This would then change the consistency of your icing. You could use it and then make sure you have extra powdered sugar on hand to thicken it back up I guess. I would try just a small test batch to see what happens. Let us know how it turns out.
I'm confused about what you are asking. I use different kinds of food coloring for all of my cakes. Are you asking about a specific brand? Is it those little drop bottles that you get at the grocery store? Those are a little watered down, but it still doesn't take a lot to get neon yellow, blue, green, etc.
bransmom: I've used those neon colors from the grocery store & Jen is right..It doesn't take alot to get them neon...They actually worked alot better than I thought....
Here's an example of a cake that I used the colors on....

I guess my instructor was wrong or maybe the neon takes less. Sorry for the misinformation and I appreciate you asking this. I would really like to try it now.
bransmom: no problem
No I don't think I had to make it thicker...the bottles are so small that there's really not enough in there to change the consistency too much....now, i will say that I did that cake awhile ago so I might not remmeber everything, but if it makes the icing too soft just add a little more powdered sugar.
Good luck
